Hampton Roads Casual Seafood

  • 11
  • Share

Any of you who live in Virginia Beach might know of D & M Seafood, fish market/casual take-out eat-in restaurant. Well, as of last week it closed, so I'm searching for something similar. A place that only serves really good fried seafood, fish and chips, shrimp and chips, oysters and chips etc. Preferably with a take-out option.

Any suggestions?

  1. I grew up on the Gulf Coast, so to me, seafood is fried seafood. When I moved to HR, I looked around for a way to get my fried shrimp fix. The search ended at Surf Rider -- five locations in HR -- two at the beach. One on Laskin Road, west of the oceanfront, but east of Birdneck, other open seasonally at Marina Shores (if you liked D&M, the one at Taylor's Landing near Little Creek might be closest). They feature a wide range of seafood -- shrimp, oysters, crab cakes, scallops -- all prepared on premises -- the shimp are hand butterflied, for example. Everything is also available broiled, and some steamed items as well. Sides range from the standard fries, to wonderful steamed broccoli with a butter/hollandaise sauce. You won't be disappointed at Surf Rider.

Oh I love Surf Rider..but I'm looking for more of a take-out place, like D & M was. I grew up around seafood markets that would have a little whole in the wall restaurant on the side where all you could order was their seafood and fries. Not fussy, not that expensive but so good.. HR doesn't seem to have anythink like that.

I couldn't agree with you more!! We always went to the Newtown Road location as it was just around the corner from our apartment. I have never had a bad meal there. It is where we always took out of town guests looking for great seafood at a reasonable price. Even their cocktails are priced right. Lord I miss that place while we are in the Midwest for shore duty.

      2. I haven't tried it in a while but Ocean Seafood on Laskin Rd, next to the Greyhound bus station, cooks up some stuff. All I've ever gotten was fried shrimp or calamari - came with fries and a roll - but I recall there being a more extensive menu. Definitely a hole in the wall. I don't even think there's a spot to eat in there. It's a seafood market (very small) and I think they used to sell some wines. It near Birdneck and Laskin but closer to the beach side.

There is an article in today's Virginian Pilot (Beacon: Princess Anne edition) about the closing of D&M but they are planning to re-open somewhere else in the future. Seems they got a good offer for the property.

Oh absolutely..I am, however, excited about CVS Pharmacy being put there. Hopefully D&M will reopen sometime soon.

        2. Have you been to George's seafood on Tidewater Dr. in Norfolk? It's a fish market with a takeout (fried) seafood counter. Their scallops, oysters, shrimp, etc are good and the fish guys will always fill you in on what's fresh, etc. They have packets of coctail and tarter...nothing fancy here but the seafood is really fresh. If you are looking for a bit of a dive, this is it!

It's north of the intersection of Lafayette and Chesapeake Blvds. on the west/left side of Chesapeake Blvd. I agree they always have great deals and very fresh fish. Good luck.
