'04 D'yquem a Great Value at $200?!?

The last vintage before prices got the goose. A great vintage overshadowed by '01, '03, '05. Lots of availability still. --OR-- Have I completely lost any sense of porportion post 2005?

  1. A decent price, not outrageously good, but very very decent. "Worth" it? I dunno.

Personally, I'd spend $20 less and get a bottle of the '01 Rieussec...

(Or over a hundred less and get a Baumard Qurts de Chaume, but that is a different animal, entirely.)

I'm with you on the baumard. You can get the half bottles for under $40. I have quite a few in the cellar. I bought 3 of the Rieussec for my son's birth year wine but havent really thought about touching them.

I've had Yquem several times, and Climens and Doisy Daene 'Quintessence', etc etc.... the '01 Rieussec lives up to the hype. It is *better* than the '01 Climens. Hell, it is better than the '90 Yquem!

I've thought about grabbing a bottle of the 86 rieussec. Supposed to be killer and its pretty available. Your thoughts?

Haven't had it. I think Rieussec is a pretty decent value, generally and an '86 should be drinking very well right now, but I'm no expert on this one...

              Hi Chrisinroch,
Had the wine three years ago and again last year. A very good sauternes but 'killer' - no way! The 86 Climens and Lafaurie-Peyraguey are both better. Especially the Climens, superb richness and balance with fantastic bouquet of honey, nuts and flower. The Rieussec is less muscular and complex.

              Hello whiner!
Is it not TOO EARLY to drink the '01 Rieussec? Is it worth a 100/100?! I'm just starting to drink my 88,89 and 90.

I cannot tell you if it has closed down in the past 2 years, since the last time I had a bottle was 2 years ago. Also, I cannot tell you if you enjoy young Sauternes -- obviously they change a bit as they age.

That said, unless I was planning on flipping, of course, I would take a bottle of '01 Rieussec over a bottle of '90 d'Yquem in a heartbeat. Yeah.
