Great food in proximity to Statue of Liberty

I have a friend who is going to be in Manhattan in a couple weeks and she and her sister plan to see the Statue of Liberty and would like to know what would be reasonably close. Not necessarily walking distance but a short cab ride. Something like Grammercy Tavern, Daniel, of that caliber.

I'm sure you realize that the Statue of Liberty is on Island off the bottom tip of Manhattan. accessible only by ferry. There are no restaurants on Liberty Island. (Not counting the snack bar)
Daniel is uptown on the upper east side , and even Grammercy is a fair bit away.
There isn't really any restaurants of their caliber near where you'll be.
As well, you'll get more recs if you let us know if you're looking for lunch or dinner (Daniel, for example, is not open for lunch), food prefs and price. Off the top of my head, I'd suggest the prix fixe lunch at Fleur de Sel in Chelsea.

Bouley, in Tribeca, would be a short cab ride, but all of his restaurants have just had a bit of reshuffling, and there was a less than stellar report recently. The meal I had in January was wonderful though.

Eh, I guess it's all close relatively speaking

Yes - it really is. Another issue might be whether they are "dressed" to go to one of those places after a visit to the Statute of Liberty (not that they couldn't be, just something for them to think about).
