Best Mexican Place in Park Slope?

  • 8

I apologize if there is a posting for this topic already but I'm new to P.Slope and am curious about a good Mexican place. There are SO MANY to choose from that I don't even know where to start! I'm thinking more along the lines of non-fussy, non-chic Mexican; I don't need a lovely presentation but would like fresh, tasty veggies and delicious spice! Thanks in advance.

  1. Tacos Nuevo Mexico on 5th Avenue is the only kinda authentic Mexican place in the hood,,,,I've had so-so tacos at La Taqueria, but most people seem to like it, so it might be your thing. Avoid at all means places like Mezcal and other spring break themed tex mex joints in the area. Chavella's over in Crown Heights is pretty decent too.

the new-ish place on 7th called barrio. nothing else compares. otherwise, they are all basic(ally useless)...

Well, Barrio def classifies as fussy and chic. if your idea of mexican food includes $10 margaritas, then Barrio is your place.....

fussy & chic?lol you walk in, you sit down, you order. it's casual. i'm in my shorts!
house marg is $8. perhaps you'd send them to a taco bell?

ps - tacos neuvo is SO overrated it's laughable. keep looking to "time out" for your suggestions.

    2. we had an excellent meal at Chiles & Chocolate, which is Oaxacan. It was several months ago & I didn't post about it, so I don't remember all of the details, but I do remember that the mole was wonderful..

psss - don't tell C&C they are "mexican"...they are very touchy about that....

I went to Chiles & Chocolate once and thought the mole negro was awful--heavy and relatively flavorless, with very dry pork. I haven't been to Barrio yet. Tacos Nuevo Mexico is just OK.

        2. I'll 2nd the vote for Barrio. Yes, on the expensive side but the prices are fair for the quality of the food. Their guacamole is among the best I've ever had; I think the margaritas are a bit overrated. I went last week and it was about $75 for 2 with 2 margaritas, an order of guacamole, and 2 entrees. We were very satisfied and will go back! Otherwise, there are some good burrito joints in Williamsburg and some good tamales to be found in Sunset Park, but the query was about Park Slope.
