Sushi in Providence
For quick, quality sushi, I'd say Haruki Express on Waterman Street on the East Side.
While some believe that there are huge quality differences in sushi in Providence, I think it's just not the case and we don't have the huge differences in restaurants some other cities have. Everything here is "just fine, pretty satisfying."
While I think Haruki East in Wayland Square is probably the best, I'm more often at Tokyo or Sakura, which have more extensive, authentic menus. The small Ran Zen at Hope St/Blackstone is just fine, with its limited menu. I recently had Sushi Express on Thayer St and liked it quite a bit. Even the newly pan-Asian Phoenix Dragon's sushi on Broadway wasn't objectionable and was quite satisfactory.
I think each is flawed in some respect... I think Haruki East is overpriced and its "trying to be hip and minimal" interior doesn't do it for me... I often find Tokyo's interior to be - sorry - somewhat dirty, which REALLY turns me off in a Sushi place. I've also found their service to be some of the worst in the city. Sakura is probably the most inconsistent, with greatness on some nights and sloppy mediocrity on others...
Where I go to sushi in town is more often determined by which neighborhood I'm in. I don't think we have any "destination" sushi places here and, given the state of the economy, I doubt we're getting any soon.
