Looking for a wine & spirits retailer in Washington DC or inside the Beltway with engaging customer service, great atmosphere and knowledgeable staff. I would be thrilled if they know their tequilas and have a top selection. Even more thrilled if someone on staff can help with wine and fine cheese pairings. Recommendations? Please.

I don't buy spirits, especially high end tequilla often, but my booze hound friends swear by Calvert Woodley for good prices, knowledgeable staff, and they might have the wine/cheese pairing too. For just wine and cheese Arrowine in Arlington is top notch. Also for just beverages, there is a little shop on the hill, I forget the name on Mass, right past Union Station that has excellent customer service too.

I thought of Calvert Woodley too, but I wasn't sure I'd say they have "engaging customer service" or a "great atmosphere." More like "older guys who are occasionally nice but often too busy and unhelpful" (and while I think they know their wine, I'm not sure about tequila). Having said all that, it's probably been a few years since I've been in there.

Cleveland apark and Ace are my two favorite shops for spirits. They ahve quirky selections loaded with lesser known brands. Mike and Tony at CP are both passionate. Joe Riley at Ace is tops and really knows his cocktails and spirits.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will check them out. I am getting the feeling their is a shortage of fine tequila and mezcal in the metropolitan region.

on the Hill - Chat's on 8 and E SE, the proprietor will know your name after one visit, long time family operation. Knows his stuff, but no cheese on premise (but then E Mkt. is only a couple of blocks away)

Schneider's is also good up on 3 and Mass. and Hayden's at 7 and NC
