Hi everyone,

I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian (eggs and dairy fine, but I don't eat meat, chicken, fish, etc.) foodie who will be in San Juan for three nights and four days with my omnivore boyfriend, and would love recommendations for the best vegetarian experiences you have had anywhere in Puerto Rico, from the street vendors to the super-fancy. We will be staying in San Juan, so recommendations there are particularly welcome, but I will drive across the country for great food! :-)

Ideally, I would like to find places where my boyfriend can get some wonderful seafood and meat dishes, but that I'm not stuck with a mish-mash of side dishes or an uninspired "vegetable platter." Also, I don't know that this will be possible, but I love eating authentic dishes, and would much prefer local specialties to eating at a restaurant geared toward veggie tourists.

Thank you so much!

I was disappointed no one responded to this post. I am in a similar situation. Does anyone have any recommendations for San Juan or Culebra?

I have been in Old San Juan for about 2 weeks and am also vegetarian (but I started eating some fish about a year ago). Some good veggie options:
- el Caribeno in Santurce - had some decent rice/beans (with no pork) and tostones (the omnivore had amazing chicken!)
- Le Berlin in Plaza Colon in OSJ... tonnes of tofu alternatives
- Cafe Mirabueno at Calle Tanca and Calle Luna in OSJ apparently is good for veg, but we did not get there
- I just came back from dinner at Barrachina and had the veggie mofongo - it was amazing! Also the black bean soup was incredible and you can get the hard boiled egg on the side if you don't eat eggs
- If you eat fish, you'll find lots of red snapper and mahi mahi, plus others if you eat more fish/seafood

Last time we were in PR we went to Yerba Buena, Latin Star, and Ajillo-Mojillo - all were excellent with veggie options. Pick up the Que Pasa magazine at the Tourist Office in OSJ - it is chock full of good info on places to eat, including veggie options. Also, the Rough Guide to PR is very good with veggie info. These will have options for Condado, Isla Verde and elsewhere if you are not in OSJ.

As for Culebra, we've not been. I suspect you might not have many options because it is smaller than Vieques and I had challenges finding veggie options there. Of course, the omnivore finds anything anywhere! Careful with rice/beans - often the beans are mixed with pork.

Enjoy!

I thought I'd try and bump this thread, since I will be staying at the El San Juan Resort next week in San Juan -- my partner and I are vegetarian, and would appreciate any additional suggestions beyond those already mentioned above. Thanks!!

Thank you Ewilensky -- yes, I do know about Happy Cow, but their listings can often be out of date. Also, I am interested in restaurants that aren't exclusively vegetarian as well -- recommendations for those with a handful of good, creative veg options are very welcome.
