my parents are seeing a show on west 54th street- looking for a great Italian place to send them for my dad's b-day. Looked into ViceVersa but they are closed on Sundays- any suggestions?

If you want something close to 54th St., Trattoria Trecolori, on 45th St., b/t B'way & 8th Av., is a favorite of mine and many other Hounds. Well-prepared homestyle Italian fare. Friendly, efficient staff. Large space with attractive decor and comfortably-spaced tables.

If your parents are willing to go further south, I highly recommend Osteria Gelsi. on the corner of 9th Av. & 38th St. Not a traditional red sauce place, the menu focuses on the cuisine of the Puglia region. The food is delicious -- the timbalo is not to be missed! -- and the space has very pleasing ambiance.
