PHX: steak for the parents

Hey everyone! My folks are coming in this weekend to celebrate my birthday and Dad said he wanted to take us out for a good steak. He suggested Ruth's Chris, but that's not high on my list of "good steaks." If I HAD to do a chain, Capital Grill would be a preference but I know we can do better than that.

They live in ABQ and are Paul's Monterrey Inn regulars from the late 60's, so my first thought was Durants, though I've not been there. So, gimme your thoughts on
a) local joint
b) okay for a 14 month old
c) some variety (wife is off meat, could do seafood).

Thanks folks!

  1. honestly for steaks with the parent's i would do durants or el charro lodge. both old school az, both have non-steaks on the menu, both not boring and uptight, and both not chains ;)

    1. I would also give serious consideration to Don & Charlie's. GREAT steaks, and lots of other options. Great atmosphere and service, too. We've taken our children there many times and they are always accomodating and happy to have them.

      1. All of the recs so far would top my list for your parents. If you're looking for something less "old school" but not a big scene like Mastros or City Hall, you may want to look at Donovan's. Less noise and the food is still pretty good.

        1. The Stockyards might be fun too, for the local history connection. I haven't been there in years, but some people on this board have said the new version is good, a quick search should turn something up.

          1. I'm probably in the same genre as your parents, though I'm not sure that I am a "steakhouse" expert. I tend to gravitate towards multi-course International menus.

Still, having just dined at Durants (first time in six mos., but about the 20th time in 10 years) I have to say it was good. I did a mini-review. It wasn't quite what I thought I knew, but good.

Now, I have had several really good meals at Capital Girll (Biltmore), and that kinda' surprised me. I've dined at the DC location, but shy away from even mini-chains, especially for steakhouses. Still, they came through.

I have not done Donovan's, but have gotten many great reports recently. Still, a min-chain, and one I have not personally experienced, but good reviews.
