I think most would agree that Mauviel is the best known, if not in fact the best, line of solid French copper cookware.

Who is Rue La La?

ANyway, there are a few different lines of Mauviel so be sure to compare apples to apples when looking at pricing.

I have several pieces of the 2.5mm line and am very happy with it. If I thought I could legitimately snap some more up at deep deep discount I"d do it, budget be damned.

I didn't think the discount was so great (around the same prices as amazon.com roughly). Fun to look at though. I do love my Mauviel cookwear. 10 years and it still looks new!

ruelala.com :
Registrant:
   Domains by Proxy, Inc.
   DomainsByProxy.com

Domains by proxy? That's a typical "I'd rather be anonymous" tactic by individuals, not legit companies.

Domain Name: RUELALA.COM
      Created on: 01-Oct-07
      Expires on: 01-Oct-08

Only registered for a year? Not so good. New is fine, but serious web businesses register their domains for 5 years or more.

From the website:
"Rue La La is... an exclusive, invitation-only online destination where Members discover premier-brand, private sale Boutiques, each open for just a brief window of time."

Now, that just screams "SCAM SITE!". Like the eBay member that's got all kinds of expensive things for sale, cheap.

Maybe if they're still around in 2 or 3 years, and I'm hearing good things about them, I'll trust them and their 'boutiques' which are only around for 2 or 3 days apparently. Until then, no web site which has used a registration obfuscation service to hide the identities of the real owners will *ever* get any business from me.

I suggest anyone using that site to be very, very wary.

Okay, a little more research later...

Apparently this is a project from a 'new' company called Retail Convergence headed by Ben Fischman. It's apparently yet another copycat of popular Euro sites like vente-privee.com. Haute Look, Regent’s Secret and Gilt Groupe are some of the others that operate similarly. Apparently there's some sort of compelling business model to combining an online closeout store like overstock.com with an invite-only social networking site like Facebook (if Facebook were invite-only). Apparently manufacturers like this 'secret sale' method because it helps them get rid of overstock without 'diluting' their brand pricing. Meaning... we know it only costs $40 to make that 4 quart pot that sells for $350, but if they sold it for less it just wouldn't be so darned desireable.

Now, why a firm that received 25 million in venture capital and bought smartbargains.com has registered their new multi-million dollar business domain through a proxy which operates via GoDaddy, for only a year, is beyond me.

I work with Mauviel....It is the ultimate in Copper Cookware. All Handmade in Normandie France. It is Marketed In USA by the same people who market Emile Henry and Rosle in the USA. The stuff is so good, that Williams Sonoma has a
catalog just for Mauviel...I'd say that's an endorsement..
And If you ever cooked with copper, you'll know why it's the best....

I use the M'Heritage with the stainless lining...easy to clean and doesn't ever need re-tinning

I bought a Mauviel extra thick (2.5mm) copper 10" frying pan with cast iron handles a couple of years ago (no more than 3 years but I think about 2 years) for $130. No special sale that I remember. Just some online site that sold lots of kitchen stuff.

Have these pans just gone up that much?

I can't remember exactly where I bought mine from though... it's killing me. I normally take better notes on this type of stuff for just this reason. I'm going to try and dig up credit card receipts/history to find out if I have to.

The price is the same... if you pay in gold bullion. However if you're paying in US dollars, well, our money has devalued quite a bit since you bought your pan. Anything imported will cost twice as much as it did 3 years ago. It used to be that 78 cents bought you one Euro. Now it's $1.40, down from $1.60.

We sell Mauviel in the shop I work at. We took a 40% increase this past spring. Needless to say, haven't sold much since....

Even two years ago though $140 for a 10" saute in the 2.5mm line seems like a good price.
