epicurgirl Sep 8, 2008 03:20 PM

Hi hounds -

I have a client coming into town on Wed and would like to take them to a nice lunch. I just started working in the area (from SF) and have yet to find the cool spots. Nice and REALLY nice is what I'm looking for. Thanks for your help!!

Phoebe

For REALLY nice in the area I think there might only be 1 place - Parcel 104. www.parcel104.com I haven't been because it isn't within my lunch budget. There are a few decent options in Santana Row (eg. Left Bank), but I don't know that they are as formal as Parcel 104.

Parcel 104 is not that fancy. It's a hotel resto in the meh Santa Clara Marriott. That said, the food is pretty darned good. Definitely a huge step up from standard business hotel resto fare. Well short, however, of the Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton. Ingredients are generally much better than Sysco standard. Food at lunch is generally simple/casual/fresh and very American. Sort of like what I might expect at Wood Tavern or Rivoli. Service at dinner is very into being a fine dining establishment (almost to the point of being annoying), but the menu is more sophisticated then. At lunch it's pretty businesslike, which I think I prefer (and I find more appropriate to the food). Definitely a NICE lunch, but it's hard to see the Marriott as a COOL spot.

I agree - Parcel 104 is the nicest place around Great America, but isn't that cool (but then there's not much that's "cool" in that part of town). If you don't mind driving 4 miles to Santana Row, Blowfish Sushi, Sino, Straits, and Tanglewood are "cool," but be prepared to spend $$$ for sometimes mediocre food.

I haven't been there in several years, but I remember Birk's as being decent both food-wise and in terms of decor.

The food's gone downhill a bit, and the carpet needs cleaning big time. We only go now because it's my FIL's favorite when he's in town.

Thanks for the update. I'll keep that in mind in case I'm ever in that particular area again on business.
