Catfish--Atlanta or northern GA

KyMikey Sep 8, 2008 12:11 PM

Are there any places in the Atlanta area (more to the north side than south) or between Atlanta and the NC border that do catfish up well--I'm not looking for a white tablecloth place--more of a Chowhound joint that specializes in fish--you know what I mean. Didn't get much of a response last time, so i'll expand the area a little and try again. Will be there next week. C'mon Hounds, what say you ??

C'mon, folks, there are millions of people in north Georgia--people eat fish down there, don't they?? So where do people go to get good catfish and lots of it ?

I live in Atlanta and I love catfish, and I have never had any catfish in town that I would really recommend. Six Feet Under is alright...but just that.
When I get really good catfish and lots of it, I tend to find myself in Mississippi.
Atlanta is a good eating city, but it doesn't have everything. Sorry.

Several years ago I had some pretty good catfish at the Catfish Den in Hiram. I'll return next time I'm in the area.

I've never had anything bad at AJ's Famous Seafood in East Cobb...their softshell crab, oysters, and shrimp are excellent, red beans and rice too...I'd find it hard to believe their catfish wouldn't be great as well. Cute little place, too. Abita beers on tap come to think of it. Only downside is that it's on the NW side of town...

Actually, I'll be passing thru Marietta soon, so I'll try to scope it out. Thanx for the recc.

I've enjoyed it at the Colonnade.

OK--you mean in addition to their famous fried chicken? ;-)

Folkes, in Marietta/Smyrna section just north of Atlanta, has good catfish.

I feel your pain. I grew up on Pritchett's in Columbus, GA. Hard act to follow. However, we've been enjoying Catfish Jim's in Kennesaw. Their hushpuppies are addictive and their whole fired catfish are pretty tasty. They have all-you-can-eat days too, although I haven't had to resort to those yet.

There is a fantastic place in NW Atlanta called Bankhead Seafood. The fish is not cat, its whiting. However, this is hands down, the best fish in town. This is definitely not a "white tablecloth" place, there is no ambience and it hasn't been renovated since the 70's. Additionally, it is take out only and in the heart of the 'hood. If you decide to go call and check for the hours as I don't believe that it is open everyday. Also, get there early because the line can get 30 deep or more. One final point, in exchange for your long wait you'll be rewarded with enough fish and hushpuppies for two, all for the price of $4.50.

Bankhead Fish and Soul sounds like a winner--a must-visit my next trip through Hotlanta. Thanx for the tip !

The most enjoyable, and consistent, catfish I have found is at Catfish Jim's - mentioned earlier. They are on US 41 just north of Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw on the west side of US 41 (Cobb Parkway).
