WTF of the day on chowhound
Here's the latest WTF? problem on chow.com: The top ad is "stealing" my topic clicks.
That is, the ad on the right overflows invisibly into the left panel, so that it's secretly twice as wide as it appears. So, even if I click an inch or three away from the ad (to left), I'm actually clicking on the ad.
This happens when I move my mouse across the ad before clicking on a topic link. (I often do this - first I scroll down on the right, then move left to read and reply to a post.) Several times over the last few days, I've thought I was clicking on "Reply", only to launch a new window with the ad.
I haven't noticed exactly which ads do this. (The ad window that opens is really slow to load, so I kill the window before the contents appear, then move on. But after the fourth or fifth time, I got mad enough to post about this problem.) I've attached a screen shot of this behavior for a Food Network ad, with the cursor circled (in red) so you can see that it's a "click" cursor, not the "nothing to click here" cursor that it should be.
This behavior is really dishonest. Clearly, though, it boosts ad traffic and chow.com revenue. For shame, chow developers!
