Where to buy quality salt?
Anyone know good places to buy salt in the NY area? I'm looking for more variety than the usual supermarket stuff - maybe some local salt, or some exotic varieties, different colors and sizes. I would prefer somewhere in Manhattan but anywhere else in the NYC area is fine too.
Also - any recommendations on salt that you've bought and liked?
Last time I was at the Dean and Deluca Soho Store, 560 Broadway (At Prince Street), I noticed a variety of gourmet salts. I didn't try an though. Good luck!

I can only answer for Northern NJ but Chef Central in Paramus had a fair selection. If you want to save time and gas go to the Bulk Foods website. http://www.bulkfoods.com
They sell several types of salt in different sizes as well as other spices and goodies. The S/H is only 5.00 for any order over 75.00 so there are bargains to be found here.

Fairway Red Hook has at least a dozen different kinds (and colors) of salt. I assume bother Manhattan stores do as well. Check the meat counter, about half the salt selection in Brooklyn is there (other is with the upscale spices).

Go to whole foods. They should have several varieties including sea salt and gray salt (pricier than sea salt)

Fairway has quite a few, including my favorite for cooking, finely ground gray salt. It tastes great and the grind is fine enough that it disperses really well.

I love Maldon salt, you can find it at Dean and Deluca, Williams Sonoma and Sur la Table all in Manhattan. Also Kalustyans has a good selection. (Lexington + 28 street)
