Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and The Bronx

Cookies, cookies...I need cookies!

We're having an open house brunch on the 14th. The caterer is preparing the brunch and a fruit salad but we'd like to serve some sort of dessert. The brunch will be ongoing so serving a cake just wouldn't work. I thought cookies would be good but there simply aren't any great bakeries that I know of where we could buy terriffic cookies. I plan to get dark and milk chocolate grahams at Economy (they're the best!) and someone suggest rugelach from Costco but I'd like a bigger assortment. I love tri-color cookies when they are really good (getting harder to find) and lace cookies and maybe some very light and good butter cookies or possibly some petits fours. We live in Ditmas Park but anywhere in Brooklyn or Queens would be fine...

If you have an alternative dessert to suggest please feel free. We are having about 70-80 people though and I'm trying not to break the bank entirely.

Thanks in advance!

    1. Betty Bakery on Atlantic Avenue makes super delicious butter cookies, sold by the pound. They're pretty, too, and would look lovely arranged on a plate. Bigger budget but more interesting flavors are at One Girl Cookie on Dean Street near Smith. Neither has rainbow cookies, but I heartily recommend both for great and great-looking cookies

        1. are tri-color the same as seven-layer cookies? if so, i'm partial to the ones at monteleone bakery, court street btw union and president. they have other decent cookies as well. not superb, but okay. but the seven layers are the best from any italian bakery i've had.

also, i don't think the costco rugelach are that good. Margaret Palcka on Court st or Columbia st (two locations) makes much better rugelach, tho IMHO the best are at andre's hungarian bakery on queens blvd.

yeah, except rugelach for 70 from Andre's would definitely break the bank! Once you've had one, you gotta have at least 5 more, 6 per person, adds up quick!

Agreed. The monteleone & cammareri tricolor cookies are the best I've had anywhere. Delicious. Their pignoli cookies are also really wonderful.

I agree on the Monteleone tri-color cookies, but would also suggest you check out their chocolate chunk cookies and their almond biscotti.

                    2. Thanks all! Looks like a visit to Atlantic Ave & Court Street are in order. Does anyone have suggestions for petits fours or have they become a disappearing art form?

Betty Bakery has them. Very, very pretty.

                          • Coscto baked stuff tastes extremely processed, even though it is affordable for a party. What about one of the good Kosher Bakeries, get some babka and cut it into squares, and some mini black and whites..there's good stuff about Chiffon Bakery in Midwood on CIA, and I was asking about Ostrovitsky's??, the other day but didn't hear anything back...they are good brunch stuff...also, mini muffins are good, and so are cupcakes. Also, strudel does really well sitting out. I saw some very nice rainbow cookies at Villabate in Bensonhurst when I was there last week. The problem I find with Italian cookies is that they look good, but often they are stale, and not soft and chewy. This always irks me. Cookies can get sort of expensive from a bakery, too. Try mixing it up a bit, with brownies, cupcakes, cookies, babka, rugelach, etc...put it on some nice platters, and it will look great.

                              1. I want to thank everyone for your suggestions. I feel like I had the GREAT Cookie Tour of Brooklyn this past weekend. We made it to Margaret Palcka Bakes on Court Street for the rugelach which were incredibly divine. I don't think I've ever tasted any so rich. But I was charmed by the place. I watched the woman there make an iced mocha with such care that looked so beautiful that I couldn't believe it. I wanted to stay and eat lunch!

From there we went to Monteleone. I can't believe I've never been in there before. I liked the tricolor cookies but in truth I think I liked them more almondy tasting than they make them. Even so they were good. The real winner tho were the pignoli cookies that my friend bought. They were to die for no question. And lots of other cookies to make my way through.

We also made it to Betty Bakery. The butter cookies were incredible. We got lemon hearts and oatmeal raisin, and chocolate chip and a few other kinds. We also bought the lemon bundt cake to test but we all found that wayyyyyyyyyyy to sweet and not to our liking. The celebration cakes tho looked unbelievable and were a lot of fun to look at.

Added to the Pirouettes from Costco and the chocolate covered Grahams from Economy Candy we were in cookie heaven thanks to all of you. Next time we'll try One Girl Cookie and whatever others come up in passing. Thanks again!
