You might try the Assi Market on Welsh Road outside of Lansdale. They carry durian and fresh lychees so you might find mangosteens there as well.

Thanks Chef, I'll give them a ring. Any shops in Chinatown anyone is aware of, I've been scouring the neighborhood for the illicit mangosteen trade for days, no luck yet.

Maybe they're not in season right now, but I've gotten varying info on when mangosteen seasons are, for example in Thailand I think some site mentioned April and May as being in season and other countries I've heard right now is the season.

I believe mangosteens are being imported now quite legally. My parents bought some for me in NYC chinatown and I had them for the first time. They were tasty. Expensive but tasty.

In March, I got mangosteen at Sue's (on 18th between Sansom and Chestnut) for $17.50 a pound. However, I haven't seen them there recently.

Sometimes I find mangosteens at Iovine's or OK Lee Produce, both at Reading Terminal Market. I have also found mangosteens at H Mart, in Upper Darby and the Asian produce-only stores in Chinatown. I haven't found any places that have them all the time. It's not illegal to carry them, just difficult.

320 Market in Swarthmore, PA has started to sell them.

              If absolutely desperate, try:

              But, yikes! $91 a kilo.

                $91/kg sounds high.
http://www.buyexoticfruits.com/mangos... seems a little cheaper, but can't tell for sure as they sell by the half dozen vs weight. My experience makes me guestimate that 6 mangosteens = 0.5kg.

When I saw the sign at Produce Junction in Glenside TODAY. That read "Fresh Mangosteen". I said what the heck is a Mangosteen and nobody in the car knew....

But, There you go, Probably at a great price too. (if they are not overripe)
