I have a friend who is searching for a crunchy cali roll - either tempura flash fried or just rolled in tempura flakes....any suggestions?

I have had tempura flaked rolls at Saki Maki (Commercial Dr), The Eatery (Kits), Tanpopo (West End) and a bunch of other places.

Look for the word "crunch" on the item - this usually indicates tempura flakes. eg, at The Eatery...not a personal favorite restaurant, I might add....the crunchy cali roll is called Captain Crunch.

Minato Sushi at Oak & Broadway has the "Minato Roll" which has crab, cucumber and tempura bits with a light teriyaki sauce. I don't think it includes avocado but I'm sure you could request something like what you're looking for.

Kaide Sushi does a "tempura" roll but it's done with Cornflakes! It's really crunchy and quite tasty if completely unique!

And I thought Ajisai in Kerrisdale was the only place doing a tempura roll with cornflakes, starlady! They don't have a deepfryer, hence the creativity, but this place has really excellent sushi all round. Just be prepared for a wait, as it is very busy...

Good to know thanks!! Kaide doesn't have a deepfryer either.

Kadoya on Davie does a very nice tempura flash fried California roll.
