Vegetarian Ginger on Montague St.
Wow. This place (above Andy's on Montague) totally surpassed all expectations (which were admittedly low). Frankly, I don't care for vegetarian restaurants, even in Chinatown, but my wife dragged me here. I am so glad she did. My hot & sour soup was the best I have had in North Brooklyn by far and among the best I've had even in NYC -- proper consistency (not too thick) and very flavorful without overdoing it. Our spinach dumplings were crisp with an excellent filling and had just the right amount of dough as apposed to almost every other dumpling I've gotten in this area which are leaden. We had soft bean curd homestyle (aka Ma Pa Tofu) as well as Szechuan Seitan and both were excellent -- light brown sauces that were actually distinct from one another (besides just which veggies came with the dish), great texture, and, again, nice depth of flavor. Beautiful presentations as well. Somebody in that kitchen knows what they are doing. I wish Andy's, Lychee, Fortune House, et al had somebody like whomever Vegetarian Ginger hired because then the Chinese food-loving meat eaters around here would be celebrating bigtime. In the meantime, get over to Vegetarian Ginger -- you will not be disappointed and you'll be healthier, too! Warning: the restaurant itself needs a facelift -- it is drab and short on style/fun/ambience. Seriously, this review prob reads like a little over the top, but I am ecstatic about this option. I am so tired of the same gloppy crap Chinese I have been stuck with ordering -- this place is a breath of fresh air and is that much more enjoyable since I thought it was going to be dreadful. Never went to The Greens, but can't imagine it was anything like this place.
