Good place to get a Cake in Houston?

We're going to be celebrating my mother's birthday this weekend and I'm not familiar with bakeries in Houston. We'll be in the Cypress Fairbanks area, but don't mind going downtown or other places in the city to get a good cake. Any suggestions?

  1. Does she like chocolate? If so, the very very best is the chocolate mousse brownie cake from Acadian in advance.

    1. Three Borthers Bakery is my favorite! hands down.

      1. Run down to Barnaby's on Shephard and buy a whole cake "to go". The Cheesecake is awesome, German Choc, Carrot Cake,, and the Apple pie ala mode,, warmed up,, better than Mom's. I hear they buy from a baker in the Heights.
        Empire Cafe on Westheimer,, same.
Central Market offers a nice selection of cakes and pasteries as well.
I've found Three Bros breads, pasteries, cookies and cakes to be on the bland side for my taste.

        1. I know it's too late for your mom's birthday, but I wanted to chime in anyway, in case anyone in the same area is looking for a good cake. My top picks are: Drew's bakery, on Louetta & Cutten, Le Petit Paris across from Willowbrook Mall, and... believe it or not, HEB makes really good cakes. their cookies are terrible, but someone brought an HEB cake to a party at my house once w/o telling me where she got it and I assumed it was from some fancy-pants bakery I hadn't been to yet. Not your typical grocery store cake. Also, I've heard great things about RJ Goodies, near Louetta and Steubner Airline.
