Picking nits, I'll bet it was halal Pakistani food :-).
If you volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, they often serve a free lunch.

Otherwise, you have the bonus adventure of finding a local catering truck.

You might try Catholic Churches on Sundays, especially ones with Schools attached. St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church an Inglewood in Culver City has wonderful Church Ladies who are out most Sundays. They are the folks in the parking lot not the vendors on the Sidewalk. Our Church, Holy Spirit Los Angeles on Pico near Hauser has Mexicans Guatemalans, Salvadorans, Filipinos and African Americans. So Depending on Which group has volunteered for the weekend, results in what kind of food is available. And Sometimes they have Fairs where all the folks in the community come out to cook.
Take Care

This is hardly why you should go, but the Great Tao Foundation in El Monte serves a free vegetarian lunch every Sunday after service. There is a wonderful English speaking discussion group that meets from 10:30-12:30 every Sunday. http://taoism.net/enter.htm
