As far as I know, they've never sold Drake's Cakes in California. I grew up in LA and never tried Drake's until I went to college in NYC in the mid-80s. I had a couple of friends in high school who'd grown up on the east coast and who bemoaned the fact that they couldn't get their hands on Drake's in Southern California even then.

Max, I know you did not ask for a recipe...but just for fun, epicurious has a recipe for Devil Dog Cake...I've made it 3 times now...it's great! I grew up in New Jersey so I know what Drakes Cakes are...but so many of my co-workers said "What's a Devil Dog?" when I brought one into work. They loved it!

re: Val
A friend brought some out from NJ to Oakland for my Drakes fix, and they are now "Drakes by Hostess"!!! The horror...what if my ring dings start to taste like the dreaded "big-wheels"; will the "yodel" now taste like the inferior "ho-ho"? Hostess doesn't have an equiv. of the "Funny-Bone" or the "Devil Dog". Happy to report that they still tasted like good ol' Drakes of my yute. I don't think they're available outside the tri-state area. I even had a tough time finding them in Manhattan @ gristede's and D'Agostinos; Had to schlep out to jersey and find an A&P or a Shop-rite!!! Someone should distribute them on the left coast, please....

its kind of a new england thing.
they started in brooklyn and had a big distribution center in r.i. for years. mothers uncle drove a truck for them for 20 years.
they were bought by I.B.C foods a while back, who also own hostess, i believe. but if you were a drakes family, no hostess products in the house! i had to sneak sno-balls on the side for years. you might want something more regional. -
