D & L BBQ, Asbury Park NJ
Busy Holiday weekend for us, visiting D & L BBQ on Saturday and going to Philly for a great meal yesterday (see Pennsylvania board soon).
D & L is located at 1206 Main St, on the northern side of Asbury about 5 blocks from Bistro Ole.
It is a very friendly relaxed restaurant. You kick back and be prepared to get your hands messy (and maybe your shirt :)) because the BBQ, especially the ribs are delicious.
We skipped apps as we thought the entrees would be enough but did have an order of cornbread for the table. Moist, dense but not heavy at all and very tasty.
3 of us ordered:
Slow Cooked Barbeque Ribs - Tender pork ribs served with baked potato or french fries and coleslaw. The ribs were also served with a small piece of that addictive cornbread.
The ribs were obviously slow cooked as they were very tender, meaty and almost knife and fork tender. Glazed lightly, they were some of the tastiest ribs we have had recently. French fries and baked potato were good but the sweet potato fries were really tasty and stole the starch sides..
One person had:
Maple Glazed Chicken - One half roasted chicken with baked potato or french fries.
This had mixed reviews. While tender and tasty the maple glaze was more of a broth leaving the chicken with a typical roast character. Mashed sweets were ordered with the chicken and they were excellent.
The one side order that deserves special mention was the baked mac. and cheese. This was perfect with a slight crust on top, cheesy and moist with out being runny. Double yum!
When entering we were told there were two remaining orders of bread pudding. We reserved them and were glad we did as the combination of moist base with caramel, touch of chocolate and whipped cream and an excellent ending to the meal.
Service is well intentioned but not the restaurant's strong suit but with the ultra casual atmosphere, sit back, have some wine and be sure to enjoy those ribs.

Tom - Thanks for the review. I've been wanting to try D&L and will now make sure to go.

I hadn't heard of D & L, so I really appreciate your review, Tom. We're always on the look-out for first-rate ribs. Sweet potato fries and well-prepared mac 'n' cheese are added incentives for us to go there.

I had posted asking about this place months ago because I was looking for a good new bbq joint and I had seen D&L on the list to get 50% off dining.
There are still a decent amount of certificates left at:

After this review I may just purchase one myself - tyvm.

Went there 3 times last Spring. Each time our check was miscalculated in the house's favor. When there were 4 of us, it was off by about $20. When there were 2 of us, it was off by about $10. The food was ok, but not good enough to make me want to return when it was so unlikely that merely bad math had struck 3 consecutive times....

OG, thats not good, understand your feelings, luckily our check was correct. On the food, the chicken was just ok and the slaw was a small portion (more was bought to the table when we asked) but we thought the corn bread, ribs, mac & cheese and bread pudding were very good.

The Jerk Wing appetizer was very good. I suggested they consider doing jerk chicken as an entree.
The ribs were good, and avoided the "falling off the bone" hype. Anyone who knows BBQ will confirm that if you pick up a rib bone and the meat stays on the plate in a pile of mush, that it is simply overcooked.
The Curry Chicken was also good with a nice glow...

Do they offer a pulled-pork sandwich? I've noticed that most rib places in this area do not offer this Virginia/Tennessee/Atlanta specialty and I'd be very interested in finding a place in my immediate area that offers such (Belmar, A.P. area).

I see they offer a "Barbeque Pork Sandwich" but I can't be sure it is actually pulled pork. The fact that it is served with lettuce, tomato and onion suggests otherwise.
Having been unable to find decent pulled pork around here I've resorted to smoking and pulling my own...

Mark,
I'm not sure there is any really good pulled pork around here, but when I get a craving I go to Memphis Pig-Out in AH. The pulled pork is pretty good (for NJ). They have really good fresh-cut fries and a nice salad bar. A friendly neighborhood place with a big old wood-paneled bar.
I have enjoyed the pulled pork from the deli counter at Sickles Market in Rumson.
If one must have outstanding pulled pork, I suggest Ridgewood Barbcue in Bluff City TN, or maybe an invitation to dine at your house. Great-looking photos!

I forgot about Sickles Markets sandwich, definitely earns 4 out of 5 grease stains (A good thing).
Speaking of Memphis Pig Out and photos, here is a pic of me with my favorite waitress Kim, from MPO (She is also a local real estate mogul, school teacher and prez of the Atlantic Highlands borough council).
Ok, it's an old pic... :-)

I went to school in Williamburg, Va. and got used to "Pierce's Pitt" BBQ, which is a staple in that area. Nothing even remotely close in this area.
This may be a silly question, but anyone tried Jack's Rib & Ale in Long Branch. I realize its a college dive bar, but I did have a great burger there. I was a bit hesitiant to try their pulled pork. Anyone try the BBQ there?

Its been many, many years since I've had the ribs at Jack's, but I always enjoyed them.

Ribs are good at Jack's - they are not slow-cooked bbq, but they are tender and the sauce is good.
The wings are excellent at Jack's - maybe the best in NJ.

I love the smell of their garlic wings when they come out of the kitchen....but for me they smell better than they taste. :)

I had the "jerk" wing app a couple months back and there was barely any jerk in there. Kinda disappointing.
I tried the Guinness and regular ribs. Guinness was ok, regular was better but still nothing to write home about.
I just generally felt sort of "meh" about this place...

I don't like hearing about all those miscalulated checks.....
even Atlantic City has better odds than this place!
