Bradenton-Cubans and Other Stuff

GF is spending a week in Bradenton soon. Looking for good local cuisine, and she'd like to find a good version of a Cuban Sandwich. We have nothing close in Iowa.
Help me keep her out of the tourist traps.
Thanks.

This place might fit the bill, although I've never eaten there:

If she goes, tell her to report back.

A few other suggestions that I can vouch for:

Star Fish Company, 12306 46th Ave W., Cortez, FL 34215. This is a fish market/restaurant where you can get a great fried grouper sandwich and eat it right on their dock. If you want "local cuisine," this is definitely it.

Acapulco Tropical, 3517 1st St., Bradenton, FL 34208. A Latin-American market with a great cafeteria in the back. They make fresh tortillas for their tacos, as well as delicious rotisserie chickens.

If she'd like something fancier, look into Ezra or Beach Bistro. Searching the board for either will turn up some results.

Sarasota isn't too far away, either. Again, let us know how it goes.

      Thanks, Nick.
Sounds perfect. The fried grouper sandwich sounds like the kind of thing that will make me wish I hadn't passed on the trip.

Was stuck in Bradenton for a couple of days and want to thank you for the Jose's and Acapulco Tropical suggestions (we're down from Boston, which has a few Cuban and Mexican options but nothing at the level of either of these places.) Jose's pork is really spectacular -- moist, flavorful, makes my mouth water just thinking about it. And Jose himself is a hoot.

Acapulco Tropical is great -- hard to beat fresh corn tortillas loaded with meat (we had the enchiladas too and they were good although not in any way unusual.) Super cheap and delicious, and a fun scene.

Had a VG Cuban sandwich in Sarasota, on Main Street opposite Main Plaza , @ 1991 Main Street I think. Almost next to Cold Stone ice cream. A caribbean named place. Best Cuban I've had in a while.

we ate at jose's last week and were blown away. my husband hadn't had a cuban sandwich in 20 years so i think his expectations were mythic. he was more than satisfied and i could have eaten this every day for the rest of the trip.

I second the Jose's comments in Bradenton, best I have had and the Owner is very entertaining as well.

Jose's! He makes a great Cuban! You should thry his roast pork though, it's his pride. He does a good fish in Orange juice marianaide but make sure taht the fish is "Snapper."
