Indian Food Festival?

Does anyone here know anything about a large scale food festival at a Hindu temple somewhere in Northern NJ? I think it's in Bridgewater or Princeton, or somewhere between them. I remember reading something (or seeing something on PBS) about it in the last couple of years, and I was hoping to find out more... if it hasn't happened already.

Any info appreciated!

(I can't Google it, because I don't remember the temple or the religious festival they are celebrating.)

EDIT: After thinking about this for half an hour, I'm not entirely confident it WAS an Indian food festival. It could have been Malaysian, or Vietnamese, or Thai. I'm so vague, I apologize. Essentially I'm looking for news of a large South Asian food festival at a very ornate temple somewhere in New Jersey.

  1. not to get too technical, but something doesn't sound right concerning "a large south asian food festival at a very ornate temple" - more likely a great festival with lots of great south asian food at a very ornate temple.

the following is not at a temple, but you'll never forget the firey end to this festival in edison in 1 month:

For the benefit of anybody else following along, the Mela at the Sadhu Vaswani Center in Closter is really nice (it's not very large, but there is very good food nonetheless, including freshly made pani puri as you eat them) if you are in the area. This year it is scheduled for Sunday, Sept 14 (12 to 6pm):

Yes, This looks like the place in my link to off the broiler. There is a ton of pictures there, which should give an idea of what to expect. To bad I live on LI, otherwise I would be there. I wonder if there is anything like this in Hicksville on LI

This does sound really good. I've marked it on my calendar. Thanks for the heads up. How were the prices?

Not very expensive at all. In years past they had a system (I'm assuming that it will be the same this year) where you bought a book of tickets, and then redeemed them at the tables with the food. If I recall correctly, a $10 book would be enough for 3 'stations' as I made my way around the tent, depending on what I was interested in.

We went yesterday it was so so hot. I had the dosa masala with dahl, and a coconut sauce. It was very good. We shared the kulfi which was nice. I would have loved to have eaten more, but my friend and I had a few very impatient (due to the heat) kids with me.

Thanks for reporting back, glad you enjoyed it while you were there. I couldn't make it due to an unfortunately scheduled soccer game; it was definitely uncomfortably hot and my son just wanted to go home and cool off afterwards. Me too, for that matter. Oh well, there's always next year...

Heads up- we just got a mailer that indicates the Sadhu Vaswani Center Mela will be held on Sunday, September 13th this year. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this time :)

I think you are right about the technicalities. I think it was a festival, celebrating a religious holiday, and the food was PART of the celebration but not the reason for celebration. I will definitely look in to the Edison festival, but I believe the one I'm looking for was closer to Bridgewater. Thanks for the info!

          3. I know little about north Jersey(or even south), but when you wrote this, I thought of this item from off the broiler- It's was in October in the posting. Might want to explore it as an option
