Went to Victory Cafe tonight for a pint and some food. Walked up Markham st and noticed a couple of restaurants north of Victory Cafe before Bloor. Anyone been to them? Need a fun place for a date and they looked good, essentially looking for a nice, romantic patio with some good food. Any suggestions? I only remembered one of the restaurants was called Southern Accent, but dont know what the other place was called.

Butler's Pantry is along there too, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it for a date. The food is good & homey, but a lot of it is made ahead, reheated, and served with a nice fresh salad. I'm a big fan of their savoury pies (veg curry pie!), but it's the kind of place I'd go for a lazy afternoon meal with a close friend.

Service at Butler's Pantry is also really, really unreliable. I've waited for ages to get food there.

On the other hand, I've heard Southern Accent is really good, but I'll leave it to someone who's actually been there to comment. The Italian place at the corner of Markham and Bloor (West side) also looks intriguing. I've only ever been for drinks & dessert - never a full meal. Can anyone comment on either of these 2 places?

Southern Accent is OK - the food is good but not spectacular, ditto the drinks. But the ambiance is top-notch, expecially on the patio.

        Bang on about Butler's Pantry!

I'm not a fan of Southern Accent, but only because I'm a lover of soul food, and the menu there doesn't reflect what I see in Harlem. I mean, the food's pretty good, but they just can't label themselves "Soul food" if they don't have collard greens, grits and fried chicken, dig?

The Italian place (Rocco's Plum Tomato) was a disappointment both times I've been there. You'll notice it's always empty.
