Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Labor Day Sunday help? (Gramercy area, D&Co, Buddakan...)

Hi, I'm swinging into town Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon. 24 madcap hours in Manhattan.

Now, I know this is a very dead time. So, I was not surprised that Gramercy Tavern is closed. That would have been my first choice.

I have a friend who *might* be working at the Flatiron Lounge on Sunday (it looks like they're open; can't reach him to confirm). So, I definitely want to stop by, and preferably eat in that general area. We would be very happy to sit at a bar and order a variety of appetizers, maybe split an entree. Or, anywhere "down" from that area (EVillage, LES).

I realize this is way afield of my request so far, but does Buddakan have a bar where a couple could grab some apps and drinks w/o reservations? We'd love to check out that space, and it looks like their strength is in the small plates anyway.

Also, any clue if Death & Co is open this Sunday? Can't find their info either.

Thanks.

    1. A couple thoughts that could help.
First, Flatiron Lounge is on the west side, and "Down" from there would be closer to West Village/ SOHO/ Meatpacking (a bit further west but still doable).

That said there are plenty of places open in the area that weekend where you can eat - including Buddakan - which does have a kicking bar - which I *assume* you can eat at but you're better off calling in advance to check.

Pastis is also right near Buddakan, and I know for a fact they are open Labor day weekend because we had Sunday brunch there last year during LDW.

Although your best bet is probably to try to get into Casa Mono which is about a 10 minute walk from Flat Iron Lounge and open all weekend. You'll probably have good luck getting in because everyone else will be out of town, and the small plates are out of this world.

      Good luck.

Well, I guess it is west by half a block. :o) Still, I do realize that in my mind I was thinking of the east side as described, so I allowed that geography to "leak" into the description of Flatiron... my bad.

Thanks, I think we will need luck this weekend!

          • Not sure about D&C but PDT for sure is closed this weekend, though.

I also have Angel's Share's address, just in case!

                • Also I saw an email that this new bar (opened in May) called Highbar is having a dj, drink and bbq event sunday. It's supposed to be a really nice place and since they are having something going on it might be fun to check out. Don't think it starts till later afternoon but you can google it! 1. Thank you Flatiron Lounge for updating your outgoing phone message with the news that you would be closed for renovations over Labor Day weekend. Oh wait, you didn't do that. Never mind then. :-\

Headed over to Union Sq Cafe for a drink and an appetizer while we discussed where to go next. The ricotta gnocchi were more like little cheese pillows than pasta in a fresh simple tomato sauce. I had their negroni, which switches out the campari for aperol... nice switch! DC had a cool highball, forget what all was in it except that it had St Germain... would have been a superb drink, but it had a little too much of the elderflower.

We had been walking alot that day... oh yeah, lunch was at 'inoteca, beet salad was great, and the sandwiches were as delicious as always.

Anyway, I guess we had worked up a need for protein, so we were both craving steaks, so we were in the neighborhood and went to Mesa Grill. The food was all good, no need to give this place more press here, but I have to ask: was it me, or is the wine list way overpriced? The food was not that outrageously priced, but $60 for a starting point for mediocre reds, jumping almost immediatey to $80 and $100 points and beyond? If I wanted to be gouged on wine, I would have gone to a traditional steak house. Is Bobby Flay all about fleecing tourists now?

I did want to check out the Buddakan space, so we went there for an after dinner drink. Cool space, a good sparkling-wine-based cocktail but again a too heavy hand with the St Germain! Take it easy with that stuff, bartenders!

(pictures added of the yummy beet salad and sandwiches from 'inoteca.)
