Lion Stout

We discovered this in the single bottle section of our local Harris Teeter. We know and like good beer and are always trying new things. We scoffed at it, since it was priced at $2.50 for a 625ml bottle. Scoffing aside, we added it to our carrier which was already crowded with individual bottles $6-12. What the heck, right?

This stout is actually pretty smooth and easy to drink. It's from Sri Lanka, which is highly unusual. Since that first try, we've added it to our bag fairly regularly. So much in fact that HT is now charging $3.29/bottle. Egads!

Has anyone else ever tried this? I usually hate cheap stouts and was surprised that I liked it. It's not replacing any old favorites, but it's a decent pour late night.

I'm so glad you responded to this post! We haven't been back to Harris Teeter on our beer runs (it is not as convenient as before) and it has been a while since we had Lion Stout. I'm going to have to make a detour on the way home tomorrow!

Don't quite know who "Harris Teeter" is (altho' I suspect he was teased in school about his name- thus why he now deals in alcoholic beverages), but Lion Stout is pretty commonly found in most "good beer stores" and isn't necessarily exclusive to one retailer. If one area store sells it, the others can get it, too, in most cases.

The good news (well, for some- there are "anti's" out there when the subject comes up) is that since this thread began several years ago, Lion Stout is now available in 330ml. cans in the US (and none of that annoying "nitro" widget stuff, either). And it's still a bargain- NJ prices put it at $1.49 a can, $8 a six-pack. Good deal for an 8% abv, world classic stout shipped half way around the world.

Nice illustration of a lion on the can, too. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3610/3... What's not to love?

Lion Stout was a favorite of Michael Jackson, who passed away on 8/30/07.
