Capitola, Aptos - any decent pizza?

I generally find the area to be a culinary wasteland, but does anybody know of any decent pizza over in these parts? I prefer real thin crust pie in a traditional, what many call "new york" style. Not looking for Pizzeria Delfina or Piccino qualities, but just good traditional pie - something akin to Giorgio's on Clement.

  1. Wow. Many years ago we used to crave Pizza My Heart, which is a local chain (started in that area). Good thin crust pizza. It looks like they're still around.

Yes, PMH is still around but has gone downhill in the last couple of years IMO. Of course, I'm basing this on the downtown SC branch and not the Capitola one. The chain is also growing and has migrated over the hill into Silicon Valley.

For Aptos, the OP can sniff out Aptos Pizza or Pizza 1. I haven't personally eaten at either, but have heard pretty good things on this board as well as via friends. I'm not sure if they fit the "new york" style...

      Pizza 1:

For a more "gourmet", wood-fired pie, Caruso's in Capitola is good.

      Caruso's Tuscan Cuisine
115 San Jose Ave, Capitola, CA 95010

      Aptos Pizza
7945 Soquel Dr, Aptos, CA 95003

      Pizza 1
253 Center Ave, Aptos, CA 95003

Not as many choices these days. I agree Pizza My Heart is BAD now. The Capitola location is better than the Pacific Garden Mall one but still. I am bummed that Aragona's is now closed - they had great pizza. Give Tony & Alba's in Santa Cruz a try - though we've had mixed results there.

Tony & Alba's on Soquel in SC is pretty bad too. We gave them a chance a while back, and the first pizza was passable but the subsequent ones have been abysmal. They have major consistency problems and may depend on who's making it and how they've been trained. I also detest the dried herbs in their crust. Friends who have ordered from the Capitola branch have described it as inedible.

The PMH in Capitola is more consistently good than the downtown location. I don't think I've had a bad slice yet from them. That's really the only New York style place I can think of in Capitola or Aptos. The new Mangiano in Aptos has somewhat thin crust, but they have not impressed me.

My favorite pizza in Aptos is Aptos Pizza and Pizza 1. Aptos Pizza is what I would call "Pizza Parlor" style (in the spirit of Shakey's/Straw Hat/Roundtable, but much better). They serve whole pies only.

Pizza 1 has a distinctive sourdough crust. Be careful when choosing a slice. Like the downtown PMH, if you pick a slice that looks like it's been sitting out for a while, you will regret it.

Roadhouse Pizza is pretty good. It's "Pizza Parlor" style. Go there if you can't get a seat at Aptos Pizza.

Stay away from Showtime and Village Host.

I have not tried the pizza from Ristorante Barolo or Bittersweet Bistro yet.

I went into the Capitola PMH for the first time in a few months yesterday. I got two slices and they were both mediocre. Almost flavorless and with an overly tough crust. And they looked fresh, not like they've been sitting out too long. I guess even the original location has gone down hill.
