Buying Fresh Crab in San Francisco

Any suggestions of the best place to buy reasonably-priced live crab in San Francisco?

  1. Chinatown or 99 Ranch market. They will be alive but from the Pacific Northwest as NorCal crab season begins in Nov and ends in May. If you want them cleaned and cooked, and/or cracked, go to Swan's Oyster Depot.

Ranch 99 in Richmond cleans them for easy home preparation, no charge. I assume all branches do the same.

No 99 Ranch in SF (closest is in Daly City), but Pacific Super's the same sort of place.

Pacific Super is not nearly as clean as Ranch 99 -- as soon as you walk into the PS Alemany store, your nose lets you know that. We used to go to that store because it was closer to our house than Ranch 99, but we now go to Manila Oriental Market on Mission or drive a bit farther to Ranch 99 in Daly City because of these cleanliness issues and because their selection of foods is more diverse, bigger and better cared for. And the seafood area of Ranch 99 is spotless with continuously running clear water tanks full of live seafood.

Have you checked out Ocean View Supermarket on Alemany near Brotherhood Way? I'm not sure if it's a chain, but it's clean and huge. (It occupies the old Albertson/Lucky space.)

            Ocean View Supermarket
3995 Alemany Blvd, San Francisco, CA

The new Pacific Super in San Bruno (where Cala used to be) is much better than the Alemany location.

And that Oceanview Super on Alemany sucks. They have so few people shopping there (as compared to the other Asian markets) that the low rate of turnover. For example, they were selling tofu that was a month past its expiration date and I saw similar expired packages of refrigerated noodles.

        2. The Housewives Market in Old Oakland has live crab.

          1. May Wah on Clement has been great for crab.

I'll second New May Wah if you find yourself at that end of town.
