Hatch Chilies in Boston

I just discovered that my local Whole Foods is carrying fresh Hatch chili peppers from N.M. If you've never tried them, they are worth picking up one or two to add to any sauce. I'm a foodie who loves to try new ingredients, and this was my new find of the week. The Hatch chili isn't too spicy and is very meaty. I tried it in my beef enchilada casserole with great success, even my 5 yr. old son said it was delicious. I'm going to try a vegetarian version of the casserole for the Labor Day holiday. If it's a success I'll post the recipe.

I know the Hatch chilies have a short season, but I read on-line that they freeze well, so I'm off to my local W.F. Market to pick up a couple of pounds of them.

  1. I lived in New Mexico for several years before moving back to Boston. Their use of green chile knows no bounds. In cream cheese on green chile bagels, grilled and used as burger topping, on pizza, in eggs, in cornbread and as a green sauce on huevos rancheros...I miss them! They freeze really well and I highly recommend. Yum!

    1. Too bad it wasn't opening weekend for football, otherwise I would get some hatch chiles to make some pork green chili.

      1. I saw Hatch Chilies at Whole Foods in Medford this morning. They are on sale 50% off until Sept. 2nd for $1.99 a pound (normally $3.99 a pound). Whole Foods in Medford had plenty of them.

The Whole Foods @ Fresh Pond has them also, same price.

Bought 2 lbs today at the $1.99 price at Fresh Pond. Maybe they have extended the price a few days? There were a lot of chilis in the bin.

        2. Hmm, I sense a batch of green chili stew distracting me in the near future!
