Roadtripping fr NYC to Portland, ME
Hi, we are roadtripping from manhattan to Portland for the labor day weekend. It will be our first time there. Do you have must go recommendations for waterfront dining, brunches, lunches, good lobsters, clam bakes, etc.? How about pit stops along the way?
Any budget, cuisine, etc. is welcomed. Thank you very much!
Also, we would really appreciate it if you have any suggestion for foodie gifts for our friends.
Go to Chauncy Creek in Kittery Maine for lobster. BYO beer, wine or other bevies. Beautiful spot outside on the water's edge. Casual picnic tables. Fun, quite and truly quintessential New England.
We make the trip once a month from NYC to our house in Portland. It's a five hour drive plus stops so we usually do not stop until we hit Maine. We really like the Clam Shack in Kittery on Rte. 1, just as you cross over the bridge into Maine on I-95. Great Lobster Roll and Fish and Chips. As an alternate, try Barnacle Billy's Shack in Ogunquit (Perkins Cove). NIce place right on the water serving fabulous lobsters Just south of Portland is Two Lights Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth with alfresco dining at picnic tables right on the Atlantic Ocean. In Portland our favorite for lunch is J's Oyster downtown which is cheap and tasty. They also have outside dining. Have a good time.
Insofar as foodie gifts go, several establishments along Commercial St. in Portland have interesting (and, of course, pricey) food products: LeRoux Kitchen, and Browne Trading. For a real taste of Maine, look for smoked seafood from Bold Coast Smokehouse in Lubec. Their smoked salmon "kabobs" are remarkable.
Thank you so much for the recommendations. Two lights looks beautiful, we definitely will stop there to check out the view. We'll try to hit as many places recommended .
Chauncey's Creek is original and fun......but bring bug spray after dusk!
Red's Eats in Wiscasset is a must!
Flo's hotdogs in York Me (north rte 1) is another institution
