Posting Delay Problem Seems to have Resolved

Servorg Aug 24, 2008 08:20 AM

Nice to be able to report that the delay in seeing posts showing up seems to be over (hopefully for good). This has been a REALLY annoying issue and it is great that the Tech. Support folks have gotten a handle on it. I am running a PC with XP and FF 3.0 as my browser of choice.

However, I can't seem to click on users names and get to their CHOW page with any consistency (especially if they are fairly new to CH and don't have a lot of posts). I keep getting the "their seems to be a slight problem" page each time I try. Hopefully that one will go away soon too.

Yes, unfortunately it does seem to be a problem again. I opened a ticket with Engineering on it yesterday, so hopefully they'll be able to resolve it quickly.

Delay problem seems (knock on my wooden head) to have resolved again. Has the tech squad gotten the servers kicking like the Radio City Rockets again? In any case, thanks to all for taming the lag beast. Hope it stays domesticated this time.

Not even close to being fixed for me or this person

It seems to depend on how you read posts. Usually if I am reading posts from 'My Chow', I can see the replies sooner than if I'm reading the board.

The lag is now in Places. It gets confusing and stuff gets overwritten.

I normally access the boards via my bookmarks. Right now I am experiencing no lag on any of them, no matter how short a time the post I am clicking on is showing as having been put up. So for my use the delay seems resolved. Of course this problem was resolved once before and then spun out of control again. So, who knows.

Okay, at the risk of pissing off the "posting delay God's" this problem seems to have resolved once again. No delay that I have noticed for the last couple of weeks. Hopefully the "servers" will remain in synch and all will be well in the land of Chow.

I noticed that as well but not over the last couple of weeks... just over the past couple of days. But I say Hallelujah just the same! Now work your magic on the Big Freeze.

I think I have used up all my super powers on the delay issue. If you read Pearls Before Swine (comic strip) you may have noticed that "Bob" the crocodile and his cohorts have also assumed super powers. One has the power to eliminate paper jams in copiers and his buddy has the power to gather up all the lose papers and bind them together (he has a giant stapler on top of his masked head). Perhaps they would allow me to join their "Super" group?

I tried three attempts to post a review but none of them are posting. It's very odd because right after I post, it shows up at the top of 'my posts'. however, when i come back later or the next day, what I posted is no longer on the top of my post. When I search for it, I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I've posted the same thing three times now but none of it appears.

The above message was posted 12 minutes ago, but is not visible in the thread. It does show up in JasmineG's recent posting activity and on the message board index.

Edited to add: So I just checked MyChow and all of a sudden, I'm not able to access the back pages, i.e., page 10, that weren't accessible earlier today. But the posting delay problem is back with us. You win some, you lose some.

Yes! Accessing earlier pages in My Chow is now accessible! I do hope it sticks around. (Now - let's see if this post shows up right after posting......)

ETA: Yes! Showed that I had posted in My Recent Posts and when I clicked on the thread, it was here. NOW to see if the edits have "taken".
OK - I can read that 2nd paragraph when I click back to the thread, BUT when I click the EDIT button again, the page flicks back up to the original post, and when I scroll back down ONLY my original post (the first paragraph) is there. I had to copy/paste to get my 2nd paragraph there....and now to see if this 3rd paragraph sticks after saving yet again.

        2. JoanN Aug 28, 2008 08:54 PM

This is odd. When I opened Hot Posts, there was a new message posted to the thread “SEPTEMBER 2008 COTM: Winner is ‘Vietnamese’” by hey sugar 6 minutes ago. But no message from hey sugar appeared in the thread. So I opened the Home Cooking Board. Instead of 61 replies, as indicated under Hot Posts, the HC board indicated only 60 replies, the most recent from greedygirl 9 hours ago. I took screen shots of the two windows, one right after the other.

I kept opening both windows, and at 28 minutes hey sugar’s message finally showed up. But it wasn’t until the message appeared that it was even listed as being posted on the Home Cooking board.

Aside from the problem of the delayed appearance of the message, I’d never noticed that the same thread offered different information depending on where that thread was viewed.

          Has anyone else noticed this?

taking an age to post my threads. I am getting fed up with trying to post.

            1. Jacquilynne Aug 28, 2008 10:15 AM

Engineering says there was an inconsistency in the caching mechanism across the different servers, and they normalized that, which is what took care of most of the lag problems. If you're still seeing additional lag issues, please let us know.

i'm still having occasional problems with my posts stalling/not going through. in fact, it happened again a couple of time last night - so i copied the text i had typed, refreshed the page, and re-posted. it has gotten better, though...at least now it's the exception as opposed to the rule :)

ETA: LOL! it just happened when i tried to post *this* reply! the little doohickey kept spinning...and spinning...and it never went through.

The stalled posting is a different problem than the posting lag (post goes through, thread shows "New Post", but post doesn't show up in the thread).
I get the never ending whirly more often than not so I ALWAYS control C whatever I type, refresh and repost - then usually get the "duplicate post" message.

thanks hannaone, you're right - different issue.

not to get too OT here, but since i don't know if there's another thread dedicated to it, still having a problem accessing the page/profile of any other hound by clicking on their handle within a post. every time i do, i get:

                        "There's been a slight problem...

Sorry, something's not working with this page. The CHOW team has been notified and will check it out."

so in order to see the other posts to which someone has contributed [or look at their favorite restaurants, or find out where they're from...], i have to use the general search feature, type in their name, and then try clicking on one of the posts that comes up in the results list. very strange.

Not fixed. Seemed to have been fixed for a few days. Now it's back. A new reply was supposedly posted 13 minutes ago to a thread I was reading. The thread says "1 reply" but the reply isn't actually appearing there.

I was so happy to come back to this site in the last few days when this problem resolved. Now it's back and I don't want to bother anymore. I think I'll go try to post something on the thread on Site Talk about scaring away new people because of all the never-ending unresolved tech issues.

So the lag between the post showing on the main page and actually showing up is returning on an intermittent basis. This one on the LA board has been showing as having been posted for 19 minutes (more by this time) and yet it still does not show when I open the thread:

                          Random picture: Guess the restaurant...

J.L. in Los Angeles Area 8 cls 19 minutes ago

ADD: Finally showed up after 27 minutes, and only after another new post came in behind it which showed up immediately. Maybe the new post somehow triggered the other hidden one to materialize?

I think the servers do this to me just out of pure spite -- as soon as a problem is noticeably improved and I close the ticket, it pops back up. I'll let Engineering know the problem is reoccurring.

I will bet that if I or someone else replies to the post, then Chadavkl post will finally show up. Very weird. Luckily this doesn't happen too often, but when it does it's quite annoying.

Add: Well the post just made me a liar, because Chandavkl post just showed up. So stike my comment and just tell Engineering about the delay problem still being extant.

I'm not sure, but I'd guess that the problem Servorg refers to is not the one where some users have a delay in getting their posts to submit, it's the delay other users have in seeing new posts to a thread that's been updated. I sure hope that has been cleared up!
