Dish - Red Bank
I was surprised not to find a thread dedicated to this excellent restaurant. The DW and I had dinner there this evening and remarkable first time dishes included a half portion of the homemade lobster raviolis for an appetizer, my whole branzino stuffed with parsley, whole garlic cloves and lemon, and the largest slice of homemade chocolate fudge cake with a side of whipped cream (the coconut cake is even better). It was just a fabulous meal. The only two points of constructive criticism I would make are the high noise level and the lack of menu of changes. Still highly recommended.

I haven't been there in a few months but I thought the food was excellent. I agree with RGR, extremely too close for comfort with the seating. My seat was back to back with the diner behind me. However, I would return. In fact, I bought a gift cert. on restaurant.com, just haven't had the chance to get back there yet.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your meal at Dish, bgut. I encountered that very high noise level the one time we had dinner there. As you know, it's one of my restaurant peeves. My other gripe: uncomfortable seating due to sardine-tight tables. Also, although our table was ready when we arrived, I noticed that had that not been the case, there is no place to wait comfortably. I'm sure Mr. R. would not hesitate to go back since he raved about his steak au poivre, and he's not as put off as I am by the lack of those "creature comforts." I did like the food, so I probably should give it another try. Btw, I see on their website that they're open for lunch. An entirely different menu. There's a hanger steak salad. I love hanger steak!

re: bgut1
b,
When we had dinner, I had the hanger steak. There were two problems which I think I've written about before. To reiterate briefly... The menu described the side as a puree of "root vegetables," which sounded interesting but turned out to be more like regular mashed -- not my favorite. And the steak was way too rare. I sent it back, they cooked it to medium rare as I had requested, and it was very good. I later discovered I could have substituted fries, which, under the circumstances, I would have preferred.
If we try lunch, I'll let you know.

b,
When I saw "root" vegetables, I thought sweet potatoes, turnips, parsnips (I adore parsnips!), even carrots. It's the type of combo I often make as "mashed" during the fall and winter. To have it turn out to be mainly white potatotoes with barely a hint of any other distinct flavor was very disappointing. I actually thought there might have been some mistake.
In any case, we hailed our server mainly because of the underdone steak. But I also mentioned the vegetables. She took my plate back to the kitchen, and the next thing I know, the chef is at our table to explain -- just as you said -- that there was no mistake, there were other vegetables mixed in. I replied that those other flavors were not very discernible, at least, not to me.
Michael's steak came with a boatload of fries, so when my steak came back, I more or less abandoned my potatoes and helped myself to some of his.
Btw, one thing you can't fault at Dish is portion size. Mr. R.'s steak was humoungous, and my hanger steak portion was very far from puny, so we ended up taking home a considerable amount of both.
