I would check middle eastern markets. Have you ever gathered wild sumac? It's not that hard to find in this area in the fall. Sumac is a weed tree around here. It has long clusters of reddish-brown berries. I picked some once and steeped it. The drink tasted pretty good. The berries have malic acid, also found in apples.

I have bought it at Penzey's in Falls Church.

There is a Penzey's in Rockville, on the Pike just north of the Best Buy.

Any middle eastern market will have it, but the sumac from Penzeys is considerably more flavorful than what I get in the big bulk containers at the middle eastern markets.

You're exactly right. Penzey's isn't the cheapest, but the quality is impeccable.

Wow, I've seen sumac everywhere in northern Virginia. Mediterranean Gourmet Market on Franconia Road, Mediterranean Bakery near Landmark, Lebanese Butcher in Falls Church, Lebanese Taverna Market on Lee Highway in Arlington....it's everywhere! Come and get it.

I just saw it at Lebanese Butcher - a huge sack for a fairly reasonable price.

Come to my house -- I'll give it to you free! Of course, you'll have to collect it from the sumac tree! :-)
