application error while trying to browse profiles
I keep getting an error when I try to browse certain profiles. It's been like that for the last few days, and nothing seems to help (refreshing, emptying the cache, etc). This is really annoying especially since I am in a country where you pay for the internet per the minute you use it. Please please fix this site, the usability problems are getting ridiculous.
The error page is titled "CHOW: Application error", with the following content:
<There's been a slight problem...
Sorry, something's not working with this page. The CHOW team has been notified and will check it out.>
PS: It doesn't happen for all profiles for some reason, but for those that it happens, the error is consistent.
-
The errors with profiles, in addition to many of the other site errors, are related to our caching mechanism. Since this is a larger issue than a simple code fix, it will be some time before it is completely ironed out. We'll keep you updated and will work to make the site more stable, consistent, and faster.
Thanks for your patience.

I can post (sometimes it hangs but not consistently) but can't open my profile in FF or IE. I can randomly open other profiles, but never my own. Been trying daily at different times of day for over a week. This is on multiple PCs with different IPs. I get the same application error per original post on this thread.

I agree with whoever said the profile problems seem to be with newer users. I never have problems with people I recognize as long-time posters, but when I click on an unfamiliar name I get the <There's been a slight problem...
Sorry, something's not working with this page. The CHOW team has been notified and will check it out.> message. In addition, I couldn't log on to Chow at all yesterday from my new laptop. My old laptop was logged in, and I'm logged in a work, but not the new laptop.
I just tried some of my older MyChow pages and I could open 2 and 3, but not 114.

Also can't access my CHOW at all. Been trying for three days now, and constant application errors. I know I don't have my full profile filled out, but some is, and I do have people listed in people I'm reading. I'm a bit older, been a member for 2+ years (since before the BIG CHANGE), so it's not just restricted to newer profiles.

A couple days ago I couldn't access other people's profiles, but I could access mine, but I can't go beyond page 1, on my page or any others. I get the "oops, sorry" message. I also get the Error 502 (?) the proxy error message. That happens every couple days for the last 2 weeks.

The last 3 days, I keep getting:
"There's been a slight problem...
Sorry, something's not working with this page. The CHOW team has been notified and will check it out.You can go to the CHOW home, or go back to the previous page."
Did I do something wrong...did I offend ya'll somehow...did ya'll remove me? I hope not...where did I go?

I have refrained from using the word paranoia or paranoid till now, but you know who you are!
You have been found guilty of upsetting someone at Chow, or Chowhound, or both... Perhaps you are just upsetting the servers by hitting refresh too frequently! (I know I have; I can no longer read "Open" on my F5 button)
They are now messing with you and gas-lighting you. They are getting even and will drive you crazy!
If you've ever had a post deleted or questioned a moderator's judgment you will be unable to reach your personal Chow page with increased frequency and it will be the least reliable when you need it the most.Moderators: please realize that I am trying to add humor to a difficult situation. I know playing whack-a-mole has your arms tired and I sense growing frustration.
Thanks for giving me a respite! I am proud to say that, as of this moment, all of Chowhoundom works for me, albeit slowly. I take back everything I've said, at least for the time being.
Thanks (and don't stop punishing the non-believers, nay-sayers and rabble-rousers).

re: amanda3571
I mentioned this on the Site Talk board, http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/5511..., on the 24th, 25th and 29th, but I guess that was the wrong place to post it (?). Are you not reading any of the complaining there? There haven't been any responses from staff there. Perhaps staff doesn't want to step into the middle of that thread...
I had no or limited access to My Chow options and other peoples info when I click their link in a post. Some or all of it works on some, infrequent occasions for several weeks. It's still all very slow and undependable.

This may be the same issue - but a variation.
When clicking on names to see their recent posts I get consistent 'errors'.
From the Ontario Board I can't see anyone's (including my own). But from other Boards there's no problem (e.g. just connected from Wine Board).
this may be why posters on some Boards are getting a variation on this issue.
The Ontario 'links' have been down for about a week - only recently discovered it was OK from other Boards. -

As of this moment, I'm getting tons of application errors trying to view profiles.

re: Engineering
All are now working. When they were failing last night, I tried to access them repeatedly and over about a 1-hour period. And all the others in my list were working then. And I was getting the application error page that says "engineering has been informed of the problem" or whatever. So maybe you've got something in your logs somewhere. Definitely I tried all 4 within a minute of posting.

This is the first time I'm reporting it but as of today Tuesday August 26, I am still having the same problem as the others. It's been going on for several days now. I can't into My Chow and cannot access past posts from other members as well as other problems stated. Any idea of how long the "fix" will take?

As some of you have noted, Engineering has launched a fix for this, and profiles should be accessible again. If anyone still can't reach theirs or someone else's please let me know.

Something I'm wondering about, for people who can't reach their own profiles. Have you ever answered any of the questions on the right hand side?

re: hannaone
It used to have some answers at one point, though, I think. My admittedly somewhat wild guess about a possible cause is that the problem is that if there's no entry in the profile questions database, the page breaks.
When I was poking at it on the weekend I found that most relatively new profiles were broken, with few exceptions. And the exceptions always seemed to have some answered questions, where most newish profiles don't. I'm just curious if that matches up with the experiences of others.

re: Jacquilynne
Sorry, but NO!!! I have entries in the profile box, and have for a long, LONG time (years). Yet for two days now all I get is a blank screen in that horrible dark brown/black I hate, with the Chow logo and a message that says "application error." Nothing else.
This happens regardless of whether I click on "My Chow" or just on my name where it says "hey, janetofreno."
And in answer to your next question, I HAVE changed my profile since the switch to the Chow format on the website. So don't try that one as an answer....it isn't a new profile to the Chow website. Sorry.
-
re: janetofreno
Yes -- that theory was shot down a few days ago -- it was my best guess for what might have been the reason why some profiles showed and some didn't at the time. Now I'm just as baffled as anyone else.
You're the second person's that's mentioned a message that says application error and nothing else -- it doesn't also talk about the Chow team being notified, etc? If not, can you send me a screen shot as a jpeg or png file to jacquilynne dot schlesier at cbs dot com or upload it here? That sounds odd, and it's a problem I'd like to see.
-
re: Jacquilynne
Sorry, but now I'm not getting the application error. Besides, I'm not sure how to save a screen shot as a jpeg. Just because I use the computer doesn't mean I know anything about it.
But in answer to your question, no, there was no talk about chow team being notified. It was just a blank black screen with the brown border and the chow logo. And the words Chow: application error up where the url is.
-
re: janetofreno
In case you see it again, here's how to take a screenshot on a PC:
While looking at the browser with the error message, push Alt+PrntScr on your keyboard. PrntScr is usually somewhere up on the top right near all the other weird keys like NumLock and Insert that none of us ever use. That basically takes a picture of the current window and puts it in your clipboard.
Then, open Paint using Start -> All Programs -> Accessories (at least in WinXP and older, I'm not sure if that's changed in Vista, as I've never seen it) and choose Edit -> Paste.
Then File -> Save As, and change 'Save as Type' to JPEG or PNG, give the file a name, and save it. Then you should be able to upload here, or email it to me.

Well at least I'm not feeling "as" paranoid after reading all these posts!
For the last couple of weeks I've gotten the "slight error" message sporadically when clicking on other Hounds' profiles but with ever increasing frequency until last night.
I couldn't and can't access "my Chow", So whatever I did, please forgive me and please give myself back to me ? Please?Harp

Add me to the list of application errors (sigh) - both on the reading list, and any "my chow" page beyond the first one.

I don't recall seeing any of these three users' names before the last day or two. While it's next to impossible for us mere mortals to test, my theory is that these are all new members and that their profiles are inaccessible due to the database latency problems that have plagued this site for nearly four months now.
