Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the New England

Amesbury/Newburyport

We have a 2 night weekend / reunion in this area. We seek a great breakfast spot (homemade items and real maple syrup), a lunch and dinner spot. Moderate prices, hole in the walls welcome. This is a budget weekend so no high end please. Also need an Inn or B and B. Thanks in advance.

  1. Ristorante Molise in Amesbury is a very nice Italian place. I have had several meals there and they have been quite good. The meals come with soup or salad and they make a particularly good cream of mushroom soup. There seafood platter is also fantastic with tons of seafood and it is quite a good value. Take into account that they do not take reservations and it can get busy on the weekends. Their full menu is also available for takeout.

    1. We really enjoyed dinner at a nice casual place in Amesbury after kayaking - Barking Dog Bar and Grill. The Pow Wow River grill looked great too but I believe more upscale.

      1. Not sure when this weekend is - but if it's before October, then definitely Hodgies on Rte 110 for your dessert - absolutely outrageous portions of ice cream and the prices are cheap too.
breakfast - Whistling Kettle on rte 110 - no real maple syrup but great affordable breakfasts (ie. apple crisp bread pudding french toast - chorizo omelette - homemade baked beans - hot pastrami omelette etc.etc.etc.) - very locals type of spot.
lunch - loaf and ladle on rte 108 in exeter (only about 15 minute ride up rte 150 out of amesbury center) - great homemade soups and sandwiches in the heart of downtown exeter. there's some nice little shops right there too if you're so inclined.
dinner - flatbread pizza - downtown amesbury. excellent handmade- wood fired pizzas with the bonus of watching the workers make them and feed the ovens - it's like a little floor show on it's own.
nightcap - barking dog or the powow river grille.

End of Oct. What is the flat bread pizza place called please?

            See below :)

        2. In addition to the previously mentioned I would add:
Bob Lobster & The Park Lunch - eat with the locals at both of these places for some of the best lobster rolls (BL), fried clams & scallops and at very reasonable prices.

Abraham's Bagel's - Excellent coffee and some of the amazingly good bagels you'll ever have north of NYC

Fowle's B&L - A NBPT institution, short of ambiance but a real deal full American breakfast to be had here, including maple syrup. It does get mixed reviews from some but you couldn't prove it in my experiences there, however. They also serve hash browns here which is a bigtime thumbs-up with me.

The Grog - is the Grog, is the Grog. Everybody lands in the Grog sooner or later.
A full service resto with a wide-ranging menu with more than decent soup, burgers, etc. to more upscale entrees. I usually head for the pub, which can be fun, with a decent, but not great, beer menu.

The Powow River Grille is one of my favorites and Ristorante Molise can be good but both may be a little more than your stated price range unless you're ordering carefully.

Flatbread Co. with it origins in VT, and it's crunchy granola kinda menu is a great place to go with the kids. Although not my favorite style of pizza, it's a country mile better than anything with "House of" in it's name.

The Barking Dog is a very reasonable priced gastro pub that would definitely be at the top of my list, Even though, I'd rather not spread the word any further on this little jewel.

            re: Amesbury Flatbread Co.

while i'm not a fan of their Specials (too many items) i am a Big Fan of their sausage, it's got a touch of Maple Syrup (Organic i think) that is not-too-sweet and i find it incredibly addictive. i usually get a Jae's Heart (their plain cheese) with Sausage and maybe half mushroom. i'm also finding that the Kids cooking are pulling the pies a little too early so i've been requesting well done and been extremely happy.

            1. re: ScubaSteve

Yeah, and now that I think about it, being a bit under-cooked was one of the things bothered me with their pies. But I trust your judgment SS, and the mouthwatering descriptiveness of your favs. So I will follow your suggestions when next there.

BTW, what happen to your excellent OP on Blue Sky? It seems to have just disappeared..

          2. If you stretch to the next town over, Merrimac, there's Rythms, excellent comfort food and reasonable and Ciao for Italian.

            1. re: treb

              Yup, what you said!

            2. Just spent a weekend there and picked Park Lunch because I liked the look of the place. Fried clams were fantastic. At least as good as at the famous Clam Box in Ipswich that I had the day before. The lobster roll looked great too.

I love teh Park Lunch, keep forgetting about that place.
