  1. I remember eating a few slices of those sheet cakes the last couple of years, but I was not the one who personally ordered them. If given enough time, I would imagine you would be able to order a special cake. I am not sure of the turn around time, or what they would be willing and able to complete. From what I remember they seemed to be as good as any other birthday cake. But that all depends on what you are comparing the cake to. Hopefully others will have a better description for you. Enjoy.

    1. My only experience with cake from BJ's was at a high school graduation party. My neighbor ordered it for the party and I have to say it was absolutely delicious. It had the white icing and strawberries with a vanilla cake inside. I should preface this by saying I am a bit of a snob when it comes to baked goods, so normally I pass on those party sheet cakes. Typically they are very sugary and I don't care for that. My neighbor handed me a piece so I felt like I at least needed to take a bite out of it. Another neighbor is also a foodie and we both were shocked to hear the cake came from BJ's. I remember my neighbor saying it was very inexpensive as well.
I can't say that it was well decorated; it just had 'Congratulations Mike' on it But for the price, I thought it was a very good cake. BTW this cake was from the location in Maple Shade, NJ.

      1. We got a BJ's cake for the twins' 2nd b-day a couple of years ago. I'm not a big birthday cake guy, but everyone at the party enjoyed it and we got some great pics of the twins covered with cake, so what more could you ask for?

I think we got a JJ the Jet Plane cake. Can't remember the filling.

        1. We have ordered several for children's bday parties. They are a great value and have many order options. We prefer their icing, over most sheet cake icings, because it isn't so sweet your teeth hurt and it's the lightly whipped variety. We typically ordered the marble cake (chocolate & vanilla). You can order 1/4, 1/2 or full sheet cakes in addition to layer cakes. They have different cake flavors, icings and fillings. They offer a three ring binder w/ their decorating options. One year we had them transfer a photograph on the cake and it turned out well.

It's your basic sheet cake done well w/o any frills but again, a good value.

          1. we love bj's vanilla or white cakes - not the chocolate cakes so much. we like the chocolate icing filling with the white frosting. we get their cake for all of our occasions!

            1. I guess I feel differently. I've never ordered one and wouldn't if you held a gun to my head. I have tasted more than my share, though, as I have a 6-year-old who gets invited to way too many birthday parties. The taste is thoroughly generic. It's no better or worse than a supermarket bakery birthday cake. The quality of the decoration is dependent entirely on the skills of the store decorator. Some of them are rather good.

However, this past weekend at BJ's I watched an irate father complain bitterly that the cake he had preordered looked nothing like the picture in the book that his daughter chose. It was even the wrong color. BJ's could/would do nothing about it since the decorator wasn't in. I think they may have offered him $2 off. But, to be fair, this could have happened at the supermarket, too.

My feeling is that their cakes are fine for young children's parties where the kids are running on too much adreniline to even notice what they're eating or for very large crowds where this would be an economical choice. If superior taste is your primary consideration, I wouldn't recommend it.

              1. I thought they were very good...especially for what I paid for them! I did some event coordinating at a college and we hosted an hour at a fundraising dance where we passed out several hundred pieces of cake. With a 150 dollar budget, we had to go cheap, and the cakes were gorgeous (thanks to a very talented decorator) and tasted fine. Sure, these weren't local bakery perfection, but they sufficed for the purpose:)
