Healthy Food Near Metrodome Area-MSP

I will be staying at the Holiday Inn-Metrodome in MSP. I'm looking for reasonable places where I can get healthy food: salads (make your own would be great), eggwhite omletes, cheap sushi, quick places to get grilled chicken/fish and veggies, and salad bars by the pound (if they have them in MSP).

Are there any grocery stores/health stores within walking distance. I won't have access to a car/cabs, and I don't want to take the light rail for the store.

Thanks!

  1. The Holiday Inn Metrodome is actually in the 7 corners area, closer to Cedar Riverside than the Metrodome.

In the immediate area, there isn't much healthy. A Quiznos, a Kwik-E Mart, an excellent brew pub, three bars and an Indian place. The Indian place would have tandoori stuff.

Cedar Riverside is better, but not much. Lots of East African places, both Somali and Ethiopian, a couple Asian places, a vegetarian place called Hard Times, and a couple coffee shops.

The closest place for what you want would be the Seward Co-op. It is walkable, but not really close, maybe 1 to 1.5 miles away.

    1. A great, healthy lunch spot is St. Martin's Table. It is a small cafe in a bookstore, walking distance east a few blocks down Riverside Ave. from the Cedar/Riverside corner. They are only open from 11:00-2:30. The food is cooked and served by volunteers who donate their tips to charity--it has an earthy, social-justicey vibe (I think it is run by a monastary?). VERY welcoming though, and in no way makes you feel weird if you're not the religious type.

Anyway, I love their homemade wheat bread, spreads, and soups. Here's more info on the food from the website: "Each day, we have one cream based soup and one vegan (non-dairy) soup. We have three sandwich spread selections: one bean spread, one tofu or vegetable spread, and one cheese spread. We have Garden, Greek, and Seasonal salads. We also have a bakery case with four or five dessert selections daily. We serve locally roasted, fair-trade coffee, black and herbal teas, organic apple cider in season, fruit spritzers and fruit juices."

As others have said, you've got a great little neighborhood right next to you in Cedar-Riverside. Go out and explore the surrounding blocks, and you'll find some inexpensive little grocery markets and plenty of small restaurants run by the diverse community living in the area.

      Enjoy Minneapolis!

      1. For a restaurant with healthy food, try Spoonriver. It's about 6 blocks away, next to the Guthrie Theater (and the Saturday-morning-only Mill City Market). Note that Spoonriver can be a bit pricy, though.

I think that Sushi Express is the closest cheap sushi. It would be a longish walk, but it's a short bus ride away - take the #16 past the U of M east bank campus, down Washington Ave, to one stop before University Ave. A block further is Caspian Bistro, which is a Persian restaurant that features grilled meats, nice rice, and a great bean-and-vegetable soup. Portions are huge, though, which can be an issue for lone travelers.

In my opinion, Seward Co-op is your best bet - they often have prepared vegetarian sushi in their deli - along with a good selection of salad greens, veggies, soups, and fruit. (Me, I would take the light rail in at least one direction - Seward is 3 blocks from the Franklin station, and your hotel is between the Cedar-Riverside station and the Metrodome station, one or two stops away.)

If you want a nice 2.5 mile walk round-trip, head across the 10th Ave Bridge (Google calls it the "Cedar Ave Bridge", but it's not) to Dinkytown. You can probably get an egg-white omelet at Al's Breakfast, but I wouldn't be surprised if this causes some joshing or sarcasm from the staff. (Al's is breakfast theater, and the staff are known for their interesting behavior.) Al's isn't known for healthy food, but with careful ordering it wouldn't be too unhealthy.

if you want any recommendations for nearby *unhealthy* food, I'm your girl - just let me know! I've deliberately refrained from telling you about any of them, except for that slip-up about Al's Breakfast...
