Rehearsal Dinner in SD area (Del Mar) for 60

Hi, my fiance and I are looking for a place to host our rehearsal dinner. Our wedding is in Del Mar, and a lot of people will be staying there. But we don't mind it being within about 15 miles of Del Mar. We would prefer Italian. A private room is a must that can hold about 60 people (majority from the Midwest). We have already contacted Il Fornaio in Del Mar but it was too pricey. We are hoping to stay below $40/person before alcohol.

Thanks for any recommendations!!! Oh, and it's not till next July so we shouldn't have to worry about things already booked up!

  1. Trattoria il Trulli in Encinitas has some of the best Italian food in the area, but it's small, so you would probably have to rent out the restaurant. I have no idea how much that would cost, but you should give them a call. It would be a charming place for a rehearsal dinner.

    1. You are going to have a hard time finding a place in Del Mar that will hold 60 people for under $40/pp w/o alcohol. Your best bet is to either raise your budget or look outside of Del Mar.

Try Piatti's in La Jolla--they are more moderately priced and have good food. No private room but they have a nice outdoor patio.

I don't think the patio at Piatti's can hold 60. Saw a shower there on Sat and it held 40 MAX. But beautiful venue.

Thanks for the ideas. Yeah, being in Del Mar isn't a big thing, I just don't want people to have to drive really far if they are staying in Del Mar, so thats why I said within about 15 miles. But really we are open to location...probably not South of downtown though or North of Carlsbad.

I'd agree on the patio. It's been a while since I've eaten out there and suspected 60 was pushing it but threw it out just in case.

        2. I had my rehearsal dinner at Buca di Beppo, and we were very pleased with the accomodations for the large party, the food, and tab. The wine selection isn't great, though. I'm not sure where the closest one to the DM area would be, I know there is one in Mira Mesa, which is inland. You could always check their website.

We considered this and I was planning to go to the Encinitas/Carlsbad location to check out the room. Did you have a private room? The girl on the phone told me it was private but didn't have doors. I am just worried about the noise level. We want to do a slide show and toats and I want everyone to be able to hear.

          2. You might try Osteria Romantica in la Jolla Shores.. It would fit your budget.. They do have a back dining room that might hold 60... not sure.. We did a party for twenty there and they did large platters for us..

agh you should also try Venice in the UTC area.. I bet they would accommodate you.....very busy for lunch, because of where there are,, not so for dinner.. very good food..

Thank you, I will check both of those out!

            2. wolfgang puck opened a new restaurant in san diego yesterday. It is connected to the La Jolla playhouse. The place is called Jai, and it appears to be a Asian fusion place, I guess like his Chinois places. They do have private rooms. Obviously I have not eaten there and it does not appear that they have a website up as of yet, but you may want to check it out.

              1. Roys has a private room and they offer a prefixe meal for 35pp. Call to see if they can offer you the prefixe for your group in the private room.

too bad about Il Fornaio, their patio is great. It would be hard to do a slide show outside, but have you thought about heavy hordevours instead of dinner at Il Fornaio, and thenyou could probably have them reserve you a portion of the patio, you would get an ocan view too. You could not beat that!

                Good luck

                1. Two options you might want to check out..sorry, I don't know how much they would cost - 1) Have you thought about doing a catered dinner at the Powerhouse Community Center at the beach? It's a great spot and I don't think it costs that much to rent it. You can call the City of Del Mar to check on it. You might be able to do a casual Italian dinner there for not as much as it would cost you at a restaurant, plus you might have more control over choice of food, wine and beverages. 2) Check out Giorgio's on Camino del Mar. It used to be called Osteria del Pescatore and the chef was Giorgio, but now it's just Giorgio's. Good Italian food. Here's a link - http://www.giorgiositalianrestaurant.com

                  Best Wishes!!

                  1. You might want to give Trattoria Acqua in La Jolla a call. They have a large patio (no view) and a very large room (beautiful view) in addition to their gazebo, porch and smaller dining room. I think one of the former could handle your number. The cuisine is pretty flexible Mediterranean/Italian mix, good service, plenty of parking underground, pretty and romantic atmosphere - I'm not sure about their pp pricing.

                    1. I am getting married in Sept. of next year and am running in to the same problems! I am not sure if you have contaced Del Mar City about Powerhouse yet but it is between $3500 - $4500 just to rent. I am still thinking about doing my rehersal dinner there because at least you can bring in any caterer and control some of the costs that way! Anyway, if you have found a better option, I'd love to hear it. Good luck and congratulations!
