MSP--- The Original Coney Island Re-Opening! ! !

  • 5

I just saw on the MPR website that The Original Coney Island on St. Peter is going to re-open. It looks like it may just be during the convention, but here’s hoping that they make a go of it and stay open.

This is HUGE news for me and I imagine some others on the board who have been around St. Paul long enough. I have vivid memories of skipping school many times with a buddy, taking the bus downtown, and going into that dark and mysterious place for those great, great dogs....

  1. I haven't lived in Saint Paul since 1992, but if the Original Coney Island reopened I'd certainly consider moving back. I hope they still have the jukebox!

    1. Uncle Ira, how long ago was it that they closed down. i moved to st p 6 years ago and, while i cant say definitively, dont ever recall seeing it opened (and this after wondering numerous times why they still had signage up)

It’s been at least 15 years, maybe 20. As I remember, the matriarch of the family, who more or less ran the place, had a stroke. It closed, but the family always insisted that it was only temporary, that they would re-open, “Just as soon as mom is better....” They’ve held off for years against a lot of pressure to sell the building for redevelopment.

In response to getgot211, yes, I read the article yesterday in the pi press and it appears that because it has taken a great deal of effort to revive it-they'll only be selling snacks and drinks ... the dogs are a long ways off --- the granddaughter of founder said. Bummer.
