Our little trip to Windsor
Hi -- Just a brief outline of our trip:
We drove up to Windsor on Sunday morning (from San Mateo), where we stayed at Worldmark Winsor.
After attending church in Santa Rosa, we went to Healdsberg, where we had lunch at Willie's Seafood and Raw Bar. We sat outside, and it was almost too warm. Lunch was tapas style and everything was great. We had lamb, scallops, roasted asparagus, cheese plate, and ceviche, and, I think, shrimp. It was all great. I didn't take notes or I'd be more specific, but we would definitely go back.
Then we went to a couple of antique stores, our new thing. At that point we could check into our room, so we did that.
Then, heading out to The Green in Windsor, we stopped at The Greengrocer before seeing All's Well That Ends Well. Though the Greengrocer had the open sign out, they were closed, but served us anyway. We got a lavender and veal sausage, a couple of breakfast sausages, a golden beet salad, a corn salad, goat milk cream cheese with herbs (wow, was that good!), and a fantastic loaf of sourdough bread. We put these in the cooler, because we weren't hungry yet after that great lunch.
The Shakespeare was a lot of fun, then we drove around the square just to check it out, and went back to our room and cooked a lovely dinner. Those salads were great. (One of the reasons we like the Worldmark places is they mostly have full kitchens. A great way to travel.)
The next morning we tried the sausages with breakfast. Both good, but I especially liked the veal and lavender. We checked out in a leisurely fashion, did some more antiquing, and then headed south.
Lunch was at The Buckeye Roadhouse in Tam Valley. It's a favorite of ours. They specialize in smoked meats, so that's the right stuff to order there. Smoky BBQ'd shrimp over a cobb salad, a smoked porkchop with chive mashed potatoes and chutney. We shared. We also were seated by the window that looks out on the smoker and it was fun watching them putting things in and taking other stuff out. The smoker had ribs and ducks in it and they added huge prime rib slabs, and then later took out the duck, and hung some other stuff.
We checked into Worldmark in San Francisco (which doesn't have a kitchen, but is at Bush and Stockton -- right in the middle of everything). They were serving wine and cheese in the lobby. We walked around, and relaxed. Then we went to dinner at Cafe Claude. It was disappointing. Not bad, just unexciting, a bit bland, nothing special, and thus overpriced. Cute though. but they seated us near the restroom door.
The next morning we equivocated about where to go for breakfast. My partner wanted to go to Sears because Swedish Pancakes sounded so good. I said she was disappointed with them last time, but she didn't remember. So we headed over there, but there was a considerable line. My partner hates waiting, so we opted for Luques, next door in the Chancellor hotel and it was surprisingly good. We were very impressed with the breakfast: I had eggs scrambled with feta, pine nuts, and spinach. she had Cajun Benedict. Everything was good except the tea, which was odd because all the servers seemed to be Asian. It was a good brand name of tea bags, but the water wasn't hot enough to get any flavor out of it.
Then we packed up and went home. The remnants of that sourdough bread were still really really tasty.
Thanks for the report back. I'm glad you gave Green Grocer a try and liked their products. My stop was past closing time too and they stayed open to take care customers.

They were really nice at the Greengrocer. When we realized they were closed, I sort of pitifully said, but your sign said "open" and I pointed to where the sign was, and he said "Oh, that's where that sign got to!" as it was hidden from his view by a poster.
the young man who waited on us, when we commented on the beautiful apple pies, said, proudly, "My sister makes them."
It was really a delightful experience.
