i'm not so interested in expensive ceviche found in chichi restaurants. don't get me wrong i like border grill's ceviche sampler. but it's just not good value to me.

i want good ceviche where it might be made daily and stored in a plastic container sold by net weight at a local grocery store, or good ceviche made in a small neighborhood restaurant.

any ideas where it might be found?
danke in advance.

I like Cebiche Del Rey in Downey. You can order ceviche (cebiche) by type, shrimp, scallop, halibut; or you can order the cebiche mixto, which not surprisingly is a mixture of the different kinds of fish. The prices are very reasonable, I think, for what you get. I think it's about $12 for the cebiche mixto. It comes with bread for the table, and for me it's enough food for a meal.

If you are really hungry, you can order an appetizer like empenadas or any number of other things.

Tere's Mexican Grill at Melrose and Cahuenga. Bright, fresh ceviche. Not being a fan of fish in general, I really like the ceviche here. Very citrusy. Note: they only have ceviche on Fridays. I think it is about $7.95 for a dinner-size portion.

No doubt about it. The best Ceviche deal is at
La Playita on Lincoln just North of Rose. West side of the street. It is a stand with a permanent line. Mixed Seafood Tostada (must weigh 4 pounds) is $3.00. Individual cups of ceviche are $1.25. Really fresh and really good.

They might be able to help you at:

Tacos Baja Ensenada

While they do specialize in various Mexican seafood dishes (all excellent), I can't vouch for the ceviche.

Mamita's in Glendale (on Brand Blvd next to the BMW dealership) has a great version of Peruvian ceviche. You can order it with just fish or the mixto with octopus, shrimp, etc. It's served with an addictive green sauce on the side. Also good at Mamita's is the Jalea de Mariscos - a giant plate of fried seafood, enough for 3 people.

There is a roach coach that comes at lunch time at Rose & 4th in Venice. Cheap and quite good & fresh for a roach coach. It's always crowded. Small portion (like 6 oz.) for $1.25 but I've seen people walking away with cartons of ceviche.

I do like this roach coach, er, catering truck, too. They sell a tostada mixta for 3 bucks and it's at least a half pound of startlingly fresh seafood.
