OK, I admit that I had a craving for Newfie Steak recently.
I purchased a chub from mapleleaf and sliced a couple of pieces and they adhered to the pan. blah...
They were not close at all in what I grew up with.
Is there anyone in the GTA that has proper Newfie steak available?
Maybe mortadella sliced as thick as you want, from a deli counter such as Highland farms. The chunks of pork fat in the sausage will help prevent sticking, and the spicing is similar, but better than Maple Leaf.

Simply put: it's fried bologna. Just get a slice of bologna, fry it up in a pan. You've got yourself some Newfie steak.
It's usually a breakfast food but it's a quick snack if you're into that sort of food.
"Man, I've got the munchies. Think I'll go fry myself up a Newfie steak."
What confused me was the "chub" - made me think of cheap salmon.
I was thinking if there was any Québécois equivalent involving people from the "East" - Gaspésiens, Madelinots, Acadiens - dunno. Fried ham is a traditional breakfast staple hereabouts, and obviously people who couldn't afford ham would probably do bologna.
Is this usually served on toast, or as is?
LOL, I just had to reply to this as many people do not understand newfoundland culture. Bologna was not considered as "poor man's food". I have heard from my mother that the poorest of children had lobster sandwiches at school.
Bologna was considered "steak" because it was unlike the traditional meats found here on the island. It is also expensive, compare to other meats, such as chicken and beef. Hence, if someone was eating bologna, it was considered to be a mainlanders equivalent to steak.
