Albuquerque to Flagstaff - Lunch & Dinner Recommendations?

We are doing a long day's drive from Albuquerque to Flagstaff, stopping briefly at the Acoma and Zuni reservations. Can you recommend favorite restaurants or diners along the way? What's the best place to stop for lunch? For dinner?

  1. It's been a while since we did that drive, but unless things have changed:

In Gallup, NM, El Rancho is worth a stop. The restaurant in this quirky historic hotel filled w/ SW antiques and memorabilia. We had an unmemorable breakfast there, but the place is wonderful. It's full of legend -- including movie connections. I won't spoil the story....

Earl's, also in Gallup, serves standard NMexican fare but welcomes Navajo vendors who sell jewelry and crafts among the dining tables. We found out about this one from a book called "Culinary New Mexico," didn't list much outside of Santa Fe, Taos and Albuquerque.

In Winslow, AZ, the must stop is La Posada -- a gloriously restored historic hotel, where you can also have a meal. I think the Enchilada or the Whole Enchilada or something like that is a local favorite for Mex food, but I've never eaten there.

    1. Pat's Chile Parlor in Zuni & Milan.

        1. La Posada is a must see. Food is pretty good but not great (and a bit pricey)... But the hotel itself is well worth the trip. I have friends that take the train from Albuquerque, have dimmer, spend the night, and train back. They love it.
