Rain (UWS)

Anyone know what the story is? They are shut down now, but Michael Bao is apparently gonig to be involved once they re-open? Is he the person responsible for Bao 111 and Bao Noodles, and if so, what will the new concept be at Rain? Would love if they opened up something similar to Bao Noodles.

Rumor (dated 7/1/08) has it that Rain will become an oyster bar/Vietnamese restaurant under the direction of Michael Bao. It is slated for a Sept. 2008 opening. I am still mourning Monsoon.

the closing of monsoon predates my arrival on the UWS, so i never experienced it, although everyone seemed to give it rave reviews. but a new Bao restaurant can only be a positive for the area. it has to be better than saigon grill, which apparently is the default for vietnamese in the UWS. and it will nost likely be better than whatever new asian fusion place is opening up on 74th and amsterdam - as if we needed another one of those...

oh, i'm so sorry you missed monsoon! just from reading your posts, i think you would have appreciated it so this just pains me.

is this bao place associated with the one in chelsea (2nd Ave near W23rd)? I've been there a least three times but not within the past 6 months.

i agree that it won't take much for this place to be better than SG and the proposed W74th place which is sounding more Japanese than anything. the spot of the latter seems destined for failure b/c it's just too big. it will eventually become a bank. fingers crossed for good vietnamese up here... or we'll have to make another teary plea to Laura Lam.

yup the one on 23rd and 2nd is bao noodles. i've always enjoyed my meals there, so i'd be pretty happy.

it's just so disappointing that the uws is developing into a pretty good food scene and the asian food is so lackluster. oh well, can't have everything, i guess.
