Being a huge ribeye fan, and going to Luger's for the first time next weekend (have had reservations for a month), for those that have enjoyed both of Luger's steaks -- the ribeye and the porterhouse...which delicious medium rare delight reigns?

Opinions much appreciated.

I've never been able to bring myself to order anything but the steak for two, two steaks for two etc... and I would not recommend doing it yourself regardless of your predilection for ribeyes. Get the tomatoes and onions, a strip of bacon per person, steak for twos all around (maybe the lamb chops as well) and sides... my favorite are the German potatoes, but the fries are great too. If you can still have desert, you are a champ.

Although I'm not a huge fan of PL's if you're going, definitely go for the. "Porterhouse experience." Personally, I'd skip the whole tomato/onion thing and tack on another side. Unless you're a marathon eater or a professional glutten, skip dessert. as well. Often overeating just makes you feel sick and you don't want that. after your PL meal.
You can always have something later on that is refreshing, like gelato or ices
I hope you have a memorable experience. :-}

Why does your posting not surprise me? Lol!.(Kidding...Sort of) I'm just saying it would be a crime to spend that much $ to dine at PL's and then stuff yourself to the point of not really being able to fully appreciate the experience of a signature (And costly) meal.Of course, those of you able to down an entire pizza will not need to take this into consideration :-}

Porterhouse is the way to go. I like, but do not love ribeye, and in my humble opinion, there is no comparison in taste. Plus, if you have a companion who wants exactly what you want, it's a perfect portion for a serious carnivore.

I totally disagree with the comment about the onion and tomato, because I think that is the best canvas to use the delicious PL steak sauce. Don't you dare put it on the steak!

Creamed Spinach is a also good, but there is only one must when it comes to sides and apps. THICK SLAB BACON. It may be $ a slice but it is definitely worth it. Almost a meal in itself if you have, say 2, or 3 slices.

I'm not a dessert eater, but their desserts are heavenly. I myself usually go for a port or a nice McCallen's 18 with a cup of coffee.

Hate to beat a dead horse but Embers doesn't serve a porterhouse. They do however serve a 60oz T-bone for two at around $32. This actually is quite scary when you consider that you are paying 50 cents an oz for a streak that would cost a regular Joe from a supermarket about the same price for two $16 oz steaks. This immediately makes me question quality, especially since that $32 price includes a potato and a side veggie, which at most reputable places would cost you another $12...minimum. So the deal is there as far as money, but what are you giving up.

I did further research and found that this place does not get very good reviews. And one actually said makes Luger's look fancy! That is downright scary. It also had comments about the clientele being obnoxious and loud, and a staff that is rude and not very attentive. A valet who was gone before the diners and people had to get their own cars.

The food gets decent, not great reviews, but all said overall it was below average. If it makes one person happy, more power to them. I have a whole in the wall that only a few people like, and as long as enough people go there to keep it open, I'm thrilled!

I thought my last paragraph pretty much stated that as long as the individual is happy that is what is important. I just think when you put down a place like Luger's and mention a place that doesn't even carry what Luger's is famous for, it should be noted. Plus, the price is so incredibly low for what you're getting you have to question the quality (prime? I doub't it_.

Lastly, when people couldn't care less about something, they don't usually respond.

Embers is not Lugers. This I am sure of. I've been going to Lugers for much of my 55 years and it's still unbeatable for porterhouse (and maybe the bacon... and the lunch burgers). If you're really into steak, this is the place & I cant agree with Brklynbobby. But Embers is good quality for the money, has a nice room, friendly owners, reliable valet service and a "clientele" that (maybe except for me and my friends) is not generally obnoxious and loud. I've been going there (Embers)for most of their 25 years in business and was there on Saturday night with my wife and 2 other couples. The food was excellent... t-bones for 2 for the other couples (each done to their specs.), prime rib for me (w/white horseradish, baked potato and an app. of salad w/blue cheese dressing), and 2 very nice pork chops for my wife (w/apple sauce, baked potato and a mediocre Caesar salad), one of which made a great lunch on Sunday. We got out of there for under $100/couple after having 2 bottles of decent wine ($40/bottle), some bourbons for 1 of us (Makers Mark) and some coffees. They started with the butcher shop next door (now closed, but does that explain their wholesale meat contacts? yes, it does) & the original owners are still always there, smiling and welcoming. I still recommend it. But, no, it's not Lugers. And Chestnut isnt Eleven Madison Park & Queen isnt Babbo. It's good though.

I don't think there is that much of a discussion here....I haven't been to Embers, but I have been to PL...once...and loved the steak (not the rest of the food). The poster specified one meal at Embers, and said it was preferable....there is no issue here. Looking at all the PL threads, even the most ardent fans have agreed that since steak is variable, its not always as good as at other times....and even prime vs choice, there are times when prime is disappointing, and choice is surprisingly good. No, not as a generality, but it happens. It is possible to have an off night at PL, and get a steak that isn't as great as expected...and have a great night at some other place. I have had some damn good $24 strip steaks at a local (to me, in Queens) and otherwise unremarkable eatery called Woodhaven House....and I've also had boring flavorless supermarket tasting stuff at the same place. Same location, same price, same type of meal...yet some steaks are excellent, and others just feh.

Having eaten at both PL's and Embers, I think both Steve R and EricMM offered very thoughtful posts.I have had both good and not so good expereinces at both restaurants Diners relate to their own experiences and those can vary on everything from the food to the service. As with models of cars, sometimes all it takes is one good/bad experience to form a good/bad impression. As far as these two restaurants go, IMO, If Diners want a good to great steak at a reasonable price, and can deal with some noise, tables set too close together and an environment that is not condusive to lingering, Embers is a great value. For a special occasion, or an, "I-have-to-try-their Porterhouse,, Diner who doesn't mind the location, sometimes brusque service, and the high price, PL's is a great experience.
