Bamonte's open/closed(?) and recs...

Two questions.

First one. Is Bamonte's in Williamsburg still open? I called today to get some information and I kept on getting a busy signal. Their website also seems to be down (or I have a bad address). Either I just had bad luck, or these might be bad signs.

Also, what do people think of the place in general? I'm thinking of going there with someone who's favorite cuisine is Italian food. I've heard it's not the most inventive place, but that they make all the standards quite well.

  1. ( For One) there are better places for you to eat iIalian at in Willamsburg. I been eating there since I was a child. The food is hit or miss. Try Frost, Barosa, Cono's , Aqua Santa all much better. If you like take a ride down Metro Ave to Uva Rara in Middle Village. The food is really good plus it has a city feel to it.

seconding the recommendation of frost. one of my all time favorite old-school italian joints. i actually have a soft spot for bamonte -- atmosphere and a facility with a handful of red sauce standbys -- but frost and cono are a cut above.

Thanks. I also missed the earlier Bamonte's thread and realized that there was not a lot of positive feedback about it. I'm not from Williamsburg though, I just wanted to check the place out.

i *do* think it's worth checking out, by all means. and i realized that i didn't address the open-closed query -- which i think can be answered with an 'open' (they take a summer vacation, as a rule). go, stick to the real basics, and enjoy the vibe.

Seconding the Frost recommendation. It's simple stuff, but done really well.
