Good Stuff Eatery is better than Ray's Hell-Burger?

I've only been once to both places, but, and I never thought I would say this, I actually think the burger is better at Spike's. I like the roll better and I think the burger had more flavor. Thoughts?

I'm ready for that tomatoes that are bound to be coming my way...

    1. I would disagree pretty strongly. Ray's Hell Burger for me had such an incredible flavor of meat that I think I could eat it without any toppings or cheese and still be very happy. The quality of the meat shines through. While the Good Stuff burger is good, it cannot begin to compete with the Ray's Hell Burger. I think the Good Stuff burger probably beats out contenders like Five Guys, but I would put it in the category of Elevation Burger - an excellent fast food burger.

      Ray's Hell Burger, on the other hand, made me completely reconsider my mixed feelings about burgers in general. One bite of that moist patty almost made me forget all the dry, tasteless garbage that I have eaten in the last 20 years.

      In my opinion, Ray's Hell Burger is so much better than Good Stuff that it is not even a competition, but I suppose that reasonable people can disagree.

      1. To me, it's apples and oranges. The burgers may be in the same price point but are in entirely different leagues.

        The burgers at Ray's are all about the meat. It’s a very substantial patty of quality beef cooked to order served on a large bun (maybe too big and too doughy) on a real plate. I compare the burgers they’re pumping out to the one you get at Central or Palena. I don’t think it’s a fast food burger at all – not necessarily a step above Five Guys (let’s be honest – who doesn’t love a double with cheese from FG?), but definitely a step in a different direction.

        Good Stuff’s burgers are, however, much closer to the fast food genre than Ray’s. Spike’s burgers aren’t necessarily cooked specifically to order (mine was in a bag on the counter about a minute after I ordered), and they’re definitely less substantial than anything you’d get at Ray’s or Central. That said, the ingredients are of very good quality and I think the ratio of meat to bread is more harmonious than its competitors.

        Take my comments for what it’s worth, but I don’t think the two establishments are all that comparable. Each has defining qualities as well as possible detractions, and, at least for me, each satisfies a different craving.

          1. Went to Ray's tonight and ordered an au poivre burger, with foie gras for $10 extra. I don't recall reading anyone else ordering one of these. The burger is cooked medium (as recommended), with lots of crushed peppercorns, top with a half inch thick foie gras that covers about half the burger (so you're getting your money's worth). I discarded the tomato and cold sauteed mushrooms so the only other condiment is a slice of lettuce. This is really good. I only wish I can wash it down with an ice cold beer. For a Friday night, there was very little wait to order and we were able to grab a seat way before our food was served. The corn and watermelons were fine but that's not the point. Wife ordered a Diablo burger and it fell apart before our eyes (she didn't cut her burger in half like I did) but she thought it was better than Central's burger. I have no real desire to drive into town to eat Spike's burger. I really don't know why a top chef contestant of questionable character and relatively lack of talent deserves so much hype.

              I went to good stuff yesterday and found it pretty good. If Spike wants to start a chain, he's probably going to have to change the name as there is already a chain called Good Stuff that has been around since at least the 70s. The one on the Strand in Hermosa Beach is a pretty great place to sit outside and eat.
