Finally ate at Thai Spices & Sushi, Cary

So after thinking "gotta try that place" for quite some time, we finally stopped in at Thai Spices & Sushi in Cary. We couldn't decide if we were in the mood for sushi or Thai, and ended up going with the Thai. The sushi menu, though not extensive, looks pretty good - they had some yummy-sounding rolls and a few nice sashimi combos on the menu. I suppose I'd call the decor "modern Asian" - you definitely knew you were in an Asian resto, but it wasn't cheesy Chinese buffet decor. Booths/tables up front and the sushi bar is at the rear.
The service was low-key but attentive and drinks were refilled quickly. The place would've had great ambiance if there hadn't been a table of four women and accompanying kids taking up the entire middle section of the resto while the kids ran around willy nilly. The women were obviously enjoying their "girls night out" and the staff was apologetic to us regarding the noise level and the content of the women's conversation, as well as the unsupervised kids.
We started off with an order of edamame, which was fairly standard. I thought it could've used more salt, but then I like my edamame practically coated in the stuff. I ordered pad Thai, which is kind of my "go-to" dish when trying a new Thai place. Hubby was tickled to see pineapple fried rice on the menu and was quick to order it, minus the shrimp (he's not a seafood fan). The dishes came quickly and piping hot. The plates were garnished nicely with a carrot rose and sprouts. We took a few bites and were a little disappointed with the lack of spice/heat in the dishes; unlike several Thai places in town, they don't have a "spice level" system where you order by stars, etc. When we mentioned that to the hostess, she brought us both srichacha and a red pepper/chili sauce to try.
That was all it took! We both cleaned our plates. The food tasted very fresh, and the pineapple fried rice was loaded with cashews, raisins, peas, carrots, chicken, pork, and several other veggies. The pad Thai had a fair amount of chicken and tofu, but it could've used a little more meat. They did a good job of cooking the tofu until firm, but not rubbery, which is a pet peeve of mine.
Overall, a really good meal, and when the resto's not full of moms out on the town, I think it would be a relaxing evening. They do have a wine list/bar, although we just had soft drinks since we were on our motorcycles. Two entrees, edamame and two soft drinks totalled just over $30 before tip.
