American Waffles in San Francisco?

I've been having a craving for ordinary AMERICAN waffles lately. Most Brunch places in San Francisco, if they have waffles AT ALL, only seem to have Belgian. And that's not a bad thing - Belgian Waffles are great. But what I'm craving lately is a blast from my past: Ordinary, square, American waffles (OK, they don't really have to be square), freshly made, with some real maple syrup! I'd prefer to NOT go to IHOP. I've been to quite a few Brunch places in San Francisco, but haven't been able to find this. Does anyone know of a place that serves American waffles?

  1. To get plain American waffles, you have to go downscale and look for diners, not brunch places.

Look at Howard's on 9th/Irving and Seal Rock Inn on Geary/Point Lobos.

    1. Modern Tea makes a lovely crisp American waffle on a vintage waffle iron. Check their website though - about a month ago they seemed to be closed for a leave of absence....

      1. It's Tops Coffee Shop , the funky little diner at Market st. and Octavia has been there 'since time immemorial''s a link

          Tops Coffee Shop history
"Take a trip to the 1930s by visiting this corner coffee shop that is been around since then and has not changed much over the years,"
CFD don't you wish that could be said about us?

Yeah I looked in the mirror on this propitious day, bemoaning the fact that another year has passed, and I'm crumbling before my very eyes! I need food to console me!

        2. The brunch at Magnolia currently has a cornmeal waffle on the menu with date butter and maple syrup. It's round...but it ain't Belgian.

                Yes, happy birthday!

The waffle was a great texture, although the cornmeal wasn't obvious and I kinda wished it was. The date butter was way too sweet for me. But in all fairness, I'm a savory breakfast lover 99% of the time so my sweet meter might be off.
